Chapter 6 - The Setup

The atmosphere in the house changed after Jason’s arrival.

Dominic seemed less angry.

He occasionally left his office door open just to hear the toddler babbling.

But Nancy’s glares grew sharper.

She warned Megan that getting comfortable in a billionaire’s house was a fatal mistake.

Megan brushed it off, focusing on the steady paychecks.

She finally had enough money to fix her car's transmission.

On a rainy Tuesday, a sleek silver car pulled up to the main gates.

A tall, striking woman in a designer coat stepped out.

It was Victoria Sterling, Dominic’s former fiancée and current board member.

She breezed past Megan without making eye contact.

She marched straight into Dominic’s office and slammed the door.

Through the thick wood, Megan could hear muffled shouting.

Victoria was furious about a missing prototype for a new medical device.

She claimed it had been stolen from the safe.

Megan kept her head down and continued polishing the hallway table.

Suddenly, the office door flew open.

Victoria pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at Megan.

She loudly declared that the new trash Dominic hired must have taken it.

Megan dropped her rag in pure shock.

Dominic wheeled out, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked.

He told Victoria to lower her voice.

Victoria scoffed and demanded they search the maid's belongings.

Nancy appeared from the kitchen, looking incredibly nervous.

She carried Megan’s worn canvas purse.

Nancy stated she had found the purse sitting open in the staff locker room.

She reached inside and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive.

It had the Mason Industries logo engraved on the side.

Megan felt all the blood drain from her face.

She swore to Dominic that she had never seen it before.

She pleaded with him to believe that she was being framed.

Victoria smirked and pulled out her cell phone to call the police.

Dominic stared at the flash drive in Nancy’s shaking hand.

He looked at Megan, his eyes completely unreadable.

He quietly asked Victoria to hand him the phone.

Instead of calling the police, he pressed a button that locked every exit in the house.

He announced that nobody was leaving until he found out who really planted it.

The lights in the hallway suddenly flickered and died.

In the pitch black, a man’s rough voice whispered right into Megan’s ear.

He told her she should have stayed away from Arthur Vance’s money.
