Chapter 6 - Blood on the Docks

Sparks flew like deadly fireworks as bullets chewed up the concrete floor.

Gabriel instantly tackled Harper to the ground.

He covered her body entirely with his own massive frame.

The sound of the ambush was absolutely deafening.

Gabriel pulled a flashbang grenade from his coat pocket and hurled it into the air.

A blinding white light exploded near the ceiling.

For one crucial second, the shooters on the catwalk were blinded.

Gabriel did not hesitate.

He rose to one knee and fired three rapid shots into the shadows.

Three heavy bodies crashed down onto the warehouse floor.

Harper scrambled forward through the smoke and debris.

She saw Noah crying in the chair, miraculously untouched by the gunfire.

She threw herself over her little brother, shielding him with her own body.

Mrs. Morrison was lying on the ground a few feet away, clutching a bleeding shoulder.

Gabriel walked over and kicked the gun out of the older woman's hand.

He pressed the hot barrel of his pistol against Mrs. Morrison's forehead.

"Where is Derek Lawson?" Gabriel demanded with a voice like thunder.

Mrs. Morrison coughed up blood and laughed weakly.

"You are too late, Gabriel," she gasped.

"Derek used this kidnapping as a distraction."

Gabriel frowned, pressing the gun harder against her skull.

"A distraction for what?"

Mrs. Morrison smiled a wicked, bloody smile.

"While you are playing hero here, Derek's SWAT team is raiding your main counting house downtown."

Gabriel swore loudly in Italian.

The counting house held over twenty million dollars in untraceable cash.

It was the lifeblood of his entire criminal organization.

He turned toward Harper and Noah to tell them to move.

He never got the words out.

A bright red laser sight suddenly sliced through the smoky air.

The tiny red dot rested perfectly in the center of Gabriel's chest.

Harper saw it out of the corner of her eye.

"Gabriel, look out!" Harper screamed at the top of her lungs.

She lunged forward and shoved Gabriel hard against the concrete pillar.

A massive sniper bullet shattered the warehouse window.

The bullet grazed Gabriel's side, tearing through his expensive coat and flesh.

Gabriel collapsed heavily onto the cold floor.
