Chapter 3 - The Empty Apartment

Harper looked up at him with wide, tear-filled eyes.
"He is at the apartment on Tremont Street," she choked out.
"Derek is going to hurt him to punish me."
Gabriel grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her to her feet.
"No one is going to hurt him," Gabriel promised.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed a secure number.
"Elias, take three cars to Tremont Street immediately," Gabriel barked into the phone.
"I want the boy extracted and brought here alive."
Harper trembled as she listened to the mob boss command his private army.
She had traded one monster for an entirely different kind of devil.
Gabriel hung up the phone and looked down at her.
"You are going to stay in this room," he instructed.
"I cannot just sit here!" Harper cried out in protest.
"You are a target, Harper," Gabriel stated firmly.
"If you walk out that door, Derek will use his badge to arrest you on false charges."
Harper knew he was right.
She sank onto the edge of the massive king-sized bed.
Gabriel walked over to his dark mahogany desk and poured two glasses of whiskey.
He handed one to her.
She took it with shaking hands.
"Why are you helping me?" she asked quietly.
Gabriel took a slow sip of his drink.
"I despise men who use their fists on women," he answered softly.
"It is a sign of pathetic weakness."
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Ten minutes passed like an eternity.
Every time the grandfather clock ticked, Harper felt a sharp pain in her chest.
Finally, Gabriel's phone buzzed on the desk.
He put it on speakerphone so Harper could hear.
"Elias, tell me you have the boy," Gabriel demanded.
There was only the sound of heavy breathing and police sirens in the background.
"Boss, we breached the apartment," Elias reported.
"The front door was completely smashed off the hinges."
Harper dropped her glass of whiskey onto the floor.
The crystal shattered into a dozen pieces.
"Where is Noah?" Harper screamed toward the phone.

"He is gone, Miss," Elias answered grimly.
"There is a massive pool of fresh blood on the kitchen floor."
