Chapter 9 - The Armored Tomb

"Did you really think I'd let you just drive away?" Silas's voice echoed off the concrete walls.
Roman revved the heavy SUV's engine and slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
The massive vehicle crashed into the steel garage door with terrible force.
The metal bent, but it did not break.
The truck bounced backward, its front bumper severely dented.
"That door is reinforced titanium, Roman," Silas mocked.
"And unfortunately for you, I've just armed the thermal charges under the garage floor."
Roman looked at the dashboard thermometer.
The temperature in the garage was already spiking rapidly.
The floor beneath them was literally turning into an oven.
"Silas is controlling this from the security room directly above us," Roman deduced.
He looked at Nora in the rearview mirror.
"I have to go up there and manually override the lockdown."
"You can't go alone, you're hurt!" Nora protested.
Roman unbuckled his seatbelt and grabbed an assault rifle from the floorboard.
"If I don't go, we all cook in here," he said grimly.
"Lock the doors from the inside and do not open them for anyone but me."
Roman stepped out of the vehicle and sprinted toward the narrow maintenance stairwell.
He kicked the door open and climbed the metal steps two at a time.
He reached the security control room and blew the hinges off the door with a burst of gunfire.
Silas spun around in his leather chair, a suppressed pistol in his hand.
Roman didn't hesitate.
He lunged forward, ignoring a bullet that grazed his shoulder.
He tackled Silas to the ground, slamming his fist into the traitor's jaw.
Silas went limp, completely knocked out.
Roman dragged himself to the main console and slammed his hand on the garage override button.
Below, the heavy titanium shutters began to rise slowly.
Roman smiled in relief, grabbing a radio to tell Nora to drive out.
Before he could speak, he looked at the security monitors.

A black helicopter had just landed in the driveway outside the open garage door.
It wasn't the police, and it wasn't Silas's men.
