Chapter 6 - The Voice in the Dark

"Hello, Roman," Silas said smoothly from the screen.
His voice echoed from surround-sound speakers mounted in the corners of the bunker.
Roman stood perfectly still, betrayal crashing over him like freezing water.
"You burned my house, Silas," Roman said, his voice surprisingly calm.
Silas chuckled, spinning the gold lighter on a mahogany desk.
"I am simply cleaning house, my friend," Silas replied, adjusting his tie.
He explained how he had planted Leo's lighter by the shed to frame the brother.
With Roman dead and Leo blamed, Silas would easily take control of the entire syndicate.
"It was a perfect plan, until the maid's brat got in the way," Silas sighed.
Nora instinctively pulled Maisie behind her legs, glaring at the screen.
"Let the woman and child go," Roman demanded.
"They have nothing to do with our business."
Silas smiled, a cruel and predatory expression.
"Oh, but they do," Silas purred, leaning closer to the camera.
He picked up a thick manila folder and opened it.
"I did a background check on your lovely maid, Roman."
Silas held up a photograph of Nora wearing a police uniform.
"Nora Ellis is a lie," Silas mocked.
"Her real name is Detective Nora Vance, organized crime division."
Roman slowly turned his head to look at Nora.
Nora’s face drained of all color, her secret exposed in the worst possible moment.
She had been planted in the mansion six months ago to find evidence against the Duca family.
Roman took a slow, menacing step toward her.
The man who had just saved her life now looked at her like an enemy.
Before Nora could explain, Silas pressed a button on his desk.

A harsh hissing sound began pouring from the air vents above them.
"I hope you two enjoy the poison," Silas laughed as the screen went black.
