Chapter 7 - The Sacrifice

The sound of heavy boots echoed down the burning corridor.

We retreated into the master bedroom and locked the heavy double doors.

Enzo dragged a solid oak dresser in front of the entrance to barricade it.

I set Lily down on the bed and turned to Allie.

I told her we were out of options.

The mercenaries began pounding violently on the bedroom doors.

Wood splintered as they fired heavy caliber rounds through the center panels.

Enzo looked at me and nodded toward the balcony.

He said he would hold the door while I got the woman and the child to safety.

I told him he would die if he stayed behind.

Enzo smiled sadly and racked another shell into his shotgun.

He said it was the only way to repay the debt for letting them inside.

I grabbed Allie’s hand and led her out onto the freezing stone balcony.

The icy wind whipped across my face as I looked down at the dark, churning water below.

I grabbed a thick coil of emergency rappelling rope from a hidden compartment in the stone wall.

I secured the harness tightly around Allie’s waist.

I handed her the little girl and told her to hold on tight.

The bedroom doors suddenly gave way with a deafening crash.

Enzo roared and opened fire, holding the line with brutal efficiency.

I kicked the release lever, and Allie and Lily rapidly descended into the darkness.

I turned back to help Enzo, raising my pistol to join the fight.

Before I could fire a single shot, a mercenary threw a fragmentation grenade into the center of the room.

The explosive detonated right at Enzo’s feet.
