Chapter 5 - The Betrayal

Enzo froze.

He looked at the barrel of my gun and slowly raised his free hand.

I demanded that he drop the flash drive onto the wooden desk.

Enzo let out a long, heavy sigh.

He tossed the small black drive onto the polished mahogany surface.

I asked him how much Lorenzo Falco had paid him to sell out my estate.

Enzo shook his head, looking more exhausted than guilty.

He swore to me that he had not taken a single dime from the Falcos.

He claimed he had intercepted the drive to protect me from Allie’s lies.

He said the maid had been playing me for a fool since the day I hired her.

I kept my gun perfectly steady.

I asked him why the perimeter alarms failed until the assassins were already inside the house.

Enzo confessed that he had disabled the outer grid himself.

He said he wanted the Falcos to take the woman and the child away.

He believed Allie’s presence was a ticking time bomb that would destroy our entire syndicate.

He thought sacrificing a maid was worth preventing a bloody gang war.

I felt a cold, ruthless anger settle over my mind.

Enzo had made a unilateral decision that resulted in the deaths of three of my men.

I told him to get on his knees.

Enzo stared at me in disbelief.

He reminded me that we had grown up together on the streets of the South Side.

I pulled back the hammer of my pistol.

I told him that brotherhood died the second he brought assassins into my home.

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the foundation of the estate.

The library windows shattered inward, showering us in razor-sharp glass.
