Chapter 6 - The Hostage Narrative

The silence in the grand dining room was suddenly deafening.

Isabelle felt the blood drain completely from her face.

"She told the press I was kidnapped?" Isabelle gasped, her hands trembling violently.

Victor’s expression instantly turned to cold, hardened steel.

He did not panic, but the dangerous energy radiating from him was palpable.

"Show me," Victor commanded his security chief.

The large man quickly pulled out a secure tablet and played a live news feed.

Patricia Morgan stood on the snow-covered steps of her brownstone, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief.

Vanessa and Clare flanked her, looking appropriately devastated for the cameras.

"My stepdaughter, Isabelle, was forcibly removed from our home late last night," Patricia told the gathered reporters, her voice trembling with perfectly rehearsed grief.

"We have reason to believe she was taken by men working for Victor Romano."

"Mr. Romano has been aggressively trying to force a hostile takeover of our family's remaining businesses."

"When we refused to sell, he resorted to this horrific act of violence."

Patricia looked directly into the camera lens, tears spilling down her cheeks.

"Please, Mr. Romano, whatever business dispute we have, do not hurt my daughter."

Isabelle stared at the tablet in absolute horror.

"She is lying," Isabelle whispered, her voice cracking.

"She threw me out into the alley!"

Victor shut the tablet off and handed it back to his security chief.

"Of course she is lying," Victor said calmly, pacing the length of the dining room.

"She realized I discovered the embezzlement."

"She knows I am coming for her."

He stopped and looked at Isabelle, his mind working rapidly through the strategic variables.

"By accusing me of kidnapping you, she has effectively paralyzed me."

"If I go to the police with the evidence of her fraud now, it will look like retaliation."

"It will look like I am trying to destroy the grieving mother of a missing woman."

Isabelle finally understood the brilliant, terrifying cruelty of Patricia’s move.

Patricia had successfully weaponized Isabelle’s disappearance to protect her stolen money.

"I have to go to the police," Isabelle said firmly, stepping forward.

"I have to tell them that I left voluntarily, that you were just helping me."

Victor shook his head slowly.

"If you walk into a police station right now, Patricia’s lawyers will claim you are suffering from Stockholm syndrome."

"They will say I threatened you into making a false statement."

"And once you are back in the public eye, Patricia will have legal grounds to drag you back to that house under the pretense of medical care."

Isabelle felt completely trapped.

"Then what do we do?" she asked desperately.

Victor poured himself another glass of bourbon, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"We flip the narrative."

"We give the press a story much more compelling than a kidnapping."

He walked over to Isabelle and gently took her trembling hand in his.

"We tell them the truth."

"That I didn't kidnap you."

"That you ran away with me because we are deeply in love."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

He opened it, revealing a massive, flawless diamond ring that caught the firelight brilliantly.

"We announce our engagement tomorrow morning, Isabelle."

"And then we use your new legal status as my wife to completely dismantle her empire."

Before Isabelle could answer, the heavy wooden doors of the dining room crashed open.

Three armed men in tactical gear poured into the room, their weapons raised.

They were not Victor's security team.
