Chapter 10 - The Architect of the Fall

The private elevator doors slid shut, sealing Isabelle inside the silent, sprawling penthouse.
She stood frozen near the mahogany desk, her mind racing frantically.
Why would Victor Romano, a man with endless resources, be carrying the exact signature ammunition used by his sworn enemies?
It didn't make any sense.
Unless he wanted the bodies left behind tonight to look exactly like the Morettis killed them.
Isabelle’s breath hitched as a terrifying realization slowly began to crystallize in her mind.
She walked over to the desk and stared at the safe where Victor had just locked their marriage license.
She remembered the code he had quickly punched in.
It was the date her father had died.
Her hands trembling, she typed the numbers into the keypad.
The heavy steel door clicked and hissed open.
She didn't reach for the marriage license.
She reached for the thick stack of financial ledgers Victor’s team had removed from the Morgan estate.
Isabelle pulled them out and frantically flipped through the pages.
She found the corporate partnership agreement between her father’s development company and Victor’s logistics firm.
She looked at the dates of the massive, fraudulent transfers Patricia had supposedly authorized.
The dates didn't align with Patricia’s sudden influx of wealth.
The dates aligned perfectly with Victor Romano's aggressive acquisition of three major international shipping ports.
Isabelle dropped the ledger, the horrifying truth hitting her like a physical blow.
Patricia Morgan didn't embezzle four million dollars from Victor.
Victor embezzled his own money through the Morgan accounts to hide his illegal acquisitions from the federal government.
He had intentionally framed Patricia.
And he had used Isabelle—the quiet, overlooked daughter who balanced the household books—as the perfect, credible witness to validate the fraud.
Suddenly, the encrypted phone on the desk buzzed with a new message.
It wasn't a text.
It was a live security feed from a warehouse near the docks.
Isabelle hesitantly tapped the screen to play the video.
The grainy footage showed Victor Romano standing calmly in the center of the warehouse.
He was not fighting a war against the Morettis.
He was standing face-to-face with the head of the Moretti family, handing him a thick briefcase full of cash.
And tied to a chair behind them, entirely unharmed but looking thoroughly terrified, was Clare.
The audio feed crackled to life.
"You played your part perfectly, Moretti," Victor said smoothly, his voice echoing through the empty warehouse.
"Patricia actually believed you were working for her."
"She handed her own daughter over to you, completely sealing her fate as a monster in the eyes of the public."
The Moretti boss counted the cash and smiled greedily.
"It was a pleasure doing business, Victor."
"What about the girl?" he asked, gesturing toward Clare.
Victor looked at Clare with absolute, chilling indifference.
"Leave her tied up."
"I will send an anonymous tip to the police in an hour."
"They will find her, and Patricia will spend the rest of her miserable life in federal prison for conspiracy and kidnapping."
Isabelle covered her mouth to stifle a scream of pure, absolute terror.
Victor had orchestrated everything.
He had manufactured the entire crisis to destroy her stepmother, secure the Morgan estate, and cover up his own massive financial crimes.
And he had manipulated Isabelle into legally marrying him, ensuring she could never testify against him in court.
The video feed cut out abruptly.
Isabelle spun around, desperately looking for a way to escape the heavily fortified penthouse.
She ran toward the private elevator, jamming her finger repeatedly onto the call button.
The display screen above the doors flashed red.
ACCESS DENIED. LOCKDOWN INITIATED.
Isabelle backed away slowly, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs.
She was completely trapped.
The soft ding of a secondary, hidden elevator echoed from the far side of the massive living room.
The doors slid open quietly.
Victor Romano stepped out into the penthouse, his charcoal suit immaculate, his weapon holstered.
He looked at Isabelle standing near the open safe, the ledgers scattered across the floor.
Victor didn't look angry.
He didn't look surprised.
He simply smiled, a cold, predatory expression that chilled Isabelle to the very bone.

"I knew you were smart enough to figure it out eventually, my beautiful wife," Victor said softly, locking the elevator doors behind him.
"Now, let me explain exactly what happens to women who know my secrets."
