Chapter 4 - The Safehouse

Isabelle froze in the freezing alleyway, clutching her worn suitcase tightly to her chest.

Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

The two massive men standing in the shadows did not move aggressively, but their presence was utterly terrifying.

"Miss Morgan," the taller of the two men said respectfully, recognizing her instantly.

"Mr. Romano instructed us to keep an eye on the property tonight."

"He anticipated your stepmother might act irrationally."

Isabelle stared at them in profound shock.

"He knew she would throw me out?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly in the cold air.

The guard nodded, gesturing toward a sleek, black armored SUV idling quietly at the end of the alley.

"He knows how people like Patricia Morgan operate when they feel their power slipping."

"Please, get in the car."

"You are freezing."

Isabelle hesitated.

She was effectively homeless, but getting into a car belonging to a notoriously dangerous mafia boss felt like stepping out of a cage and directly into a lion's den.

However, the biting wind was cutting through her thin coat, and she had literally nowhere else to go.

She nodded silently and allowed the guards to escort her to the vehicle.

The interior of the SUV was incredibly warm, smelling of expensive leather and faint cedar.

The driver instantly pulled away from the curb, navigating the snow-slicked streets of Manhattan with practiced ease.

They drove for nearly forty minutes, eventually crossing into a quiet, heavily wooded section of Westchester County.

The SUV turned down a long, private driveway lined with towering, snow-covered pine trees.

They pulled up to a massive, modern stone compound that looked more like a fortress than a home.

High concrete walls, security cameras, and armed patrols were visible even in the dark.

"Where are we?" Isabelle asked nervously.

"This is one of Mr. Romano's private residences," the guard explained, opening her door.

"You will be safe here tonight."

Isabelle stepped out into the snow, feeling entirely out of her depth.

She was ushered inside the massive house by a kind, older housekeeper who immediately took her wet coat.

"I have prepared the guest suite for you, Miss Morgan," the housekeeper said warmly.

"There is hot tea and a warm bath waiting."

Isabelle was led to a bedroom that was easily three times the size of her attic room at the Morgan estate.

It was luxurious, pristine, and completely intimidating.

She sat on the edge of the massive, king-sized bed, exhausted and overwhelmed.

She had escaped Patricia's cruelty, but she was now effectively a captive of Victor Romano.

The next evening, at exactly seven o'clock, a gentle knock echoed on her door.

"Mr. Romano is waiting for you in the dining room," the housekeeper announced.

Isabelle smoothed down her repaired cream dress, wishing she had something elegant to wear.

She walked down the sweeping staircase, her stomach tied in anxious knots.

Victor was standing by a roaring fireplace in the formal dining room, holding a glass of amber liquid.

He looked up as she entered, his cold gray eyes softening imperceptibly.

"I apologize for the dramatic extraction last night, Isabelle," Victor said smoothly.

"But I do not allow anyone to mistreat people I find valuable."

Isabelle stopped near the long mahogany table.

"Why do you find me valuable, Mr. Romano?" she asked bravely.

Victor set his glass down and picked up a thick, leather-bound folder.

"Because my financial analysts have spent the last twelve hours reviewing the detailed ledgers we removed from your family's home."

Victor opened the folder, revealing pages of complex financial data.

"And they discovered that your stepmother hasn't just been mismanaging the family fortune."

"She has been actively embezzling millions from my own shipping company."
