Chương 9 - The Aftermath

The days following the bloodbath on the roof were a blur of chaotic rebuilding and strategic preparation.
The death of Ivan Volkov sent shockwaves through the city's underworld, plunging the syndicates into a state of high alert.
Damian anticipated immediate, violent retaliation from the Volkov patriarch, but the Russian mafia remained terrifyingly silent.
It was the silence of a predator gathering its strength for a killing blow.
Inside the Costa estate, the atmosphere had fundamentally changed.
Tessa was no longer just the maid who cared for the matriarch; she was the woman who had stood on the edge of a cliff and risked her life for the family.
The heavily armed guards treated her with a new, quiet reverence.
Even Paul, the stoic head of security, offered her a respectful nod when she entered a room.
Beatrice, surprisingly, seemed calmer after the traumatic event.
The violent shock had somehow grounded her fractured mind, and she clung to Tessa with a fierce, quiet dependency.
Damian, however, was a different story.
He was consumed by the impending war, spending his days locked in the boardroom with his lieutenants, mapping out defensive strategies and supply line disruptions.
Yet, every night, at exactly midnight, he would leave his bunker and walk to the East Wing.
He would stand in the doorway of Room 104, watching Tessa softly read Beatrice to sleep.
They didn't speak about what happened on the roof. The trauma was too fresh, the emotions too complicated for a man built entirely on logic and violence.
But the silence between them was no longer cold; it was thick with unspoken gratitude and a dangerous, simmering connection.
On the seventh day after the attack, Damian found Tessa sitting alone on the massive stone terrace overlooking the ocean.
The sea was calm, reflecting the silver moonlight like a mirror.
Damian stepped out into the cool night air, holding two glasses of expensive bourbon.
He handed one to Tessa and leaned against the stone railing beside her.
"You shouldn't be out here without a guard," Damian noted softly.
Tessa took a sip of the burning liquid, letting out a heavy sigh.
"I just needed to breathe real air for a minute," she replied. "The walls in there feel closer every day."
Damian looked out at the dark water, understanding the suffocating weight of paranoia better than anyone.
"The Volkovs haven't retaliated yet," Damian said, his voice low. "It means they are planning something massive. When they strike, it won't be a skirmish; it will be a siege."
He turned to look at her, his dark eyes intense in the moonlight.
"I am moving you and my mother to a secure safe house in the mountains tomorrow morning. You will be entirely off the grid."
Tessa frowned, shaking her head.
"I'm not leaving you here to fight a war alone."
"You are a civilian, Tessa," Damian argued, his tone hardening. "You survived Ivan because he was arrogant. His father is not arrogant. He is a butcher."
Tessa set her glass on the stone railing and stepped closer to Damian, entirely unafraid of his imposing presence.
"I didn't survive Ivan because he was arrogant," Tessa stated firmly. "I survived because I stopped running. I am not hiding in a mountain bunker."
Damian stared at her, mesmerized by the sheer strength radiating from the woman he had once watched sweeping floors on a security monitor.
He reached out slowly, his large, calloused hand gently tracing the line of her jaw.
Tessa didn't flinch. She leaned into his touch, her heart hammering against her ribs for an entirely different reason than fear.
Damian closed the distance, pressing his lips to hers in a sudden, desperate kiss.
It was fierce and consuming, a physical release of the terrifying tension they had both been carrying for weeks.
Tessa wrapped her hands in the lapels of his suit, pulling him closer, anchoring herself to the monster who had become her protector.
When they finally broke apart, Damian rested his forehead against hers, his breathing heavy.
"You stay by my side," Damian whispered fiercely. "You don't leave my sight."
"I won't," Tessa promised softly.
The romantic moment was entirely shattered by the sudden, deafening wail of the estate's primary perimeter alarms.
Klaxons blared through the night air, and the entire property was instantly bathed in blinding, strobing red security lights.
Damian spun around, drawing his weapon as Paul burst through the terrace doors.
"Boss!" Paul shouted, his face pale with absolute panic. "It's not the Volkovs at the gates!"
Damian gripped his gun tightly, pushing Tessa behind him.
"Who is it?" Damian demanded.

Paul swallowed hard, looking terrified for the first time in his life.
"It's the FBI, boss. And they have a federal warrant for your arrest."
