Chương 5 - The Velvet Cage

The sun rose over the Costa estate, casting long, harsh shadows across the shattered glass of the East Wing.
The cleanup crew had already removed the bodies, scrubbing the blood from the hardwood floors with clinical efficiency.
Damian sat in his private study, a glass of expensive bourbon untouched on the mahogany desk.
He had spent the entire night fortifying the estate, calling in heavily armed favors from allied families across the city.
The Volkov syndicate had declared open warfare, and the prize was not territory or shipping lanes.
The prize was personal.
Tessa sat on a plush leather sofa across from him, looking entirely out of place in her borrowed, oversized sweater.
Her injured hand was professionally bandaged by Damian's private doctor.
She stared at her lap, her exhausted body trembling slightly despite the warmth of the room.
"Ivan knows you are here," Damian stated, his voice flat and analytical.
"He used my mother to test my defenses, but he used you to twist the knife."
Tessa finally looked up, her eyes dark with a fear she had carried for years.
"He never lets anything go," she whispered. "If he knows where I am, he will keep coming. I need to leave. I can't bring this violence into your home."
Damian let out a short, humorless laugh.
"This home was built on violence, Miss Miller."
He stood up, walking around the desk to stand directly in front of her.
"You have no money, no family, and nowhere to hide. If you walk out those gates, Ivan's men will snatch you off the street before you reach the bus stop."
"So what do I do?" Tessa asked, her voice cracking with desperation.
Damian looked down at her, seeing the fierce, unspoken resilience that had kept her alive this long.
"You stay here," Damian commanded softly. "You move into the guest suite in the secure wing. You continue caring for my mother."
"I am not a prisoner," Tessa shot back, a flash of defiance returning to her eyes.
"No, you are an asset," Damian corrected her. "You saved my mother's life. I protect my assets."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, black smartphone.
"This is encrypted. Only three people have the number. You will carry it at all times."
Tessa stared at the phone as if it were a venomous snake, but she slowly reached out and took it.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked softly. "You could have thrown me to the wolves and bought yourself time."
Damian leaned closer, close enough that she could smell the faint trace of ozone and expensive cologne.
"Because in my world, loyalty is bought," Damian whispered.
"You showed me loyalty when you had nothing to gain and everything to lose. I do not forget debts."
He turned and walked back to his desk, dismissing her.
Tessa stood up, clutching the phone tightly, and walked out of the study.
As soon as the heavy oak doors closed behind her, Paul stepped out from the shadows of the adjoining room.
"Boss, you can't keep her here," Paul warned grimly. "She's a massive liability. Ivan will burn the city down to get to her."
Damian picked up his glass of bourbon, his eyes cold and calculating.
"Let him try, Paul."
Damian took a slow sip of the amber liquid.
"Ivan thinks he can use Tessa as a weakness to break me."
May you like
Damian smiled, a sharp, terrifying expression that promised absolute ruin.
"He doesn't realize I am going to use her as the bait to completely destroy him."
