Chương 10 - The Federal Trap

The strobing red lights of the estate's alarm system painted the terrace in a chaotic, bloody glow.

The deafening roar of armored tactical vehicles crashing through the outer iron gates echoed up the cliffside.

This was not a mafia hit; it was a highly coordinated federal raid.

"How the hell did they get a warrant?" Damian demanded, grabbing Tessa's hand and pulling her quickly back into the mansion.

"They have a witness," Paul stated grimly, running alongside them down the marble hallway. "Someone handed them the encrypted ledgers for the entire port operation."

Damian’s mind raced, rapidly calculating the disaster.

The port ledgers were highly classified, kept strictly offline in a secure vault beneath the boardroom.

Only three people had access to that vault: Damian, his underboss, and Paul.

"Burn the hard drives in the bunker," Damian ordered Paul without missing a step. "Then get my mother out through the subterranean tunnels. I’ll hold them off at the front."

Paul nodded, breaking away toward the basement stairs.

Damian pulled Tessa into his private study, locking the heavy oak doors behind them.

He moved quickly to the mahogany desk, pulling a false bottom out of a drawer and grabbing a stack of banded hundred-dollar bills and two forged passports.

"You need to leave," Damian said urgently, shoving the money and a passport into her hands.

"The FBI will tear this house apart. If they find you here, they will lock you up as an accomplice just to pressure me."

Tessa stared at the passport, her hands trembling.

"I just promised I wouldn't leave your side," she pleaded, tears welling in her eyes.

"The rules just changed," Damian said, his voice tight. "The feds don't play by syndicate rules. I can't protect you in a federal holding cell."

He grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look at him.

"Take the tunnel with Paul. Go to the address in the passport. I will find you when I clear this mess."

Before Tessa could argue, the massive front doors of the estate were blown completely off their hinges by a breaching charge.

The sound of heavily armed FBI SWAT agents flooding the main foyer echoed through the walls.

Damian pushed Tessa toward a hidden panel behind the bookshelf, meant as a final escape route.

"Go. Now." Damian commanded.

Tessa hesitated for a fraction of a second, then quickly kissed him hard on the mouth before slipping into the dark, narrow passageway.

Damian closed the bookshelf just as the study doors were kicked open.

A dozen SWAT agents swarmed the room, aiming laser sights directly at Damian's chest.

"Damian Costa, put your hands in the air!" the lead agent screamed.

Damian calmly placed his Glock on the desk and slowly raised his hands, his face an emotionless mask of pure control.

He allowed them to push him against the wall and lock heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they marched him out of the study and into the ruined foyer, a man in a sharp federal suit walked through the smoke and debris.

It was Special Agent Harris, the man who had been hunting Damian for five years without success.

Harris smiled, looking incredibly smug.

"We finally got you, Costa," Harris sneered. "Your empire is finished."

Damian didn't look angry; he looked analytical.

"You don't have the ledgers, Harris. A raid without evidence is just vandalism."

Harris chuckled, adjusting his tie.

"Oh, we have the ledgers, Damian. And we have the witness who handed them to us."

Harris turned toward the main staircase and gestured for someone to come down.

Damian’s eyes narrowed, expecting to see his underboss or perhaps a corrupted guard walking down the steps.

Instead, the figure descending the marble staircase made Damian’s blood run completely cold.

It was Tessa.

She was no longer wearing the terrified expression of a girl running for her life.

She walked with absolute confidence, holding a silver flash drive in her uninjured hand.

She stood next to Agent Harris and looked directly into Damian's shocked, betrayed eyes.

"Thank you for the access codes, Damian," Tessa said, her voice completely devoid of the warmth she had shown him moments ago.

"The FBI appreciates your cooperation."
