Chapter 9 - The Ambush

Harper screamed in terror and instantly covered her ears.
Vincent stepped casually out from behind a massive oak tree, holding a smoking pistol in his hand.
Elias and a dozen heavily armed men materialized silently from the shadows of the forest.
Vincent walked over to Harper, pulled her into his chest, and held her in a fierce, protective embrace.
He whispered into her hair that he never actually believed she was the mole.
He explained that locking her in the basement was a deliberate trap to see which rat would scurry down to extract her.
Harper clung tightly to his leather jacket, trembling uncontrollably from the adrenaline.
Vincent apologized softly for locking her in the dark, promising he would make it up to her.
Elias searched Simon's bloody pockets and retrieved a set of car keys meant for a getaway vehicle.
He pointed down the dirt road where a heavily armored transport van was waiting in the shadows.
Vincent looked at Harper and declared that it was time to end this miserable war once and for all.
He loaded her into his own personal SUV, refusing to let her out of his sight again.
The mafia convoy drove at blinding speeds directly toward the Marcano family's main compound.
Vincent did not bother with the element of stealth this time.
His men blew the front iron gates entirely off their hinges with shoulder-fired rocket launchers.
A massive, brutal firefight erupted instantly across the manicured lawns of the compound.
Vincent left his soldiers to slaughter the guards and dragged Harper safely inside the main house.
They kicked down the heavy oak doors leading to the boss's private office.
Don Marcano was sitting calmly at his desk, casually sipping a glass of red wine amidst the gunfire outside.

He smiled wickedly at Vincent and pressed a hidden button located under his mahogany desk.
Thick steel shutters slammed down aggressively over all the windows and doors, locking the three of them inside.
