Chapter 8 - The Traitor

Harper scrambled backward until her spine hit the freezing concrete wall of the cell.
Simon stepped into the room, wearing an expensive suit that did not hide his naturally cowardly posture.
He smiled at her with a nasty, greedy expression that made Harper's stomach turn.
She asked him in a raspy whisper how he had managed to get past Vincent's elite security team.
Simon laughed softly and admitted he had been on the Marcano family payroll for over five years.
He proudly confessed that he was the one who tipped them off about Vincent dining at the restaurant on Tuesday.
He also gloated that he was the one who planted the burner phone in her bedroom to frame her.
Simon explained that he used his clearance as the estate's wine supplier to sneak inside the compound unnoticed.
He grabbed Harper forcefully by the arm and pulled her roughly to her feet.
He told her that Don Marcano still wanted her alive to use as ultimate leverage against Vincent.
He dragged her out of the cell and pushed her toward a secret underground maintenance tunnel.
Harper fought back fiercely, kicking his shins and scratching deeply at his face.
Simon cursed loudly and backhanded her across the cheek, sending her crashing onto the hard dirt floor.
He pulled out a silver pistol and aimed it directly at her forehead.
He ordered her to walk quietly or he would leave her dead in the tunnel.
Harper wiped warm blood from her split lip and started walking slowly down the dark corridor.
They eventually reached a rusted metal grate leading out into the surrounding dense forest.
Simon pushed the heavy grate open and climbed out into the cool night air.
May you like
Harper followed him cautiously, but the moment her foot touched the grass, a loud gunshot rang out.
Simon's eyes went wide before he dropped completely dead at her feet.
