Chapter 2 - The Shattered Glass

Shards of glass rained down over the dining room like deadly, jagged confetti.

Vincent moved faster than a man his size should ever be able to move.

He lunged across the table and tackled Harper to the floor just as a second spray of bullets tore through the leather booths.

The deafening roar of automatic weapons echoed relentlessly through the small restaurant.

Harper covered her head with her hands, screaming as porcelain plates shattered into dust all around them.

Vincent shielded her entire body with his own heavy frame.

He did not flinch as bullets buried themselves into the wooden wall right above his head.

The gunfire abruptly stopped, replaced by the screeching tires of a fleeing vehicle peeling out into the rainy street.

An eerie, ringing silence fell over the ruined restaurant.

Simon, the manager, was sobbing loudly somewhere near the kitchen doors.

Vincent slowly stood up, brushing broken glass from his expensive suit, and pulled Harper to her feet.

He looked her up and down to ensure she was not bleeding.

He told her coldly that a rival family had seen him leave her that massive tip on Tuesday night.

His enemies now believed she was an important asset to him.

Harper shook her head frantically and told him she was just a broke waitress trying to pay her rent.

Vincent looked at her with dark, serious eyes that offered no comfort.

He told her that the mafia did not care about the truth, and she was officially a target now.

He reached into his pocket and handed her a small, cheap black cell phone.

He ordered her to pack a bag and leave the city immediately if she wanted to survive the weekend.

Suddenly, the black phone in her trembling hand began to ring.

Harper stared at the screen, her stomach dropping as the caller ID displayed the name of her mother's nursing home.
