Chapter 5 - The Deadly Exchange

Leo's terrified, high-pitched cries echoed endlessly through the massive, cavernous warehouse.
My knees nearly buckled at the horrific sight of my tiny, innocent baby suspended precariously over the boiling acid.
"Please, don't drop him!" I screamed hysterically, trying to sprint forward before Ethan grabbed my arm.
"Stay behind me, Mariah," Ethan commanded, his voice eerily calm despite the chaotic, terrifying situation.
He slowly placed his heavy assault rifle onto the dirty concrete floor and kicked it far away.
His remaining bodyguards reluctantly lowered their weapons, completely outgunned by the dozens of snipers hiding in the rafters.
The tall man holding Leo was Salvatore Romano, the ruthless head of the rival crime family.
Salvatore laughed wickedly, lowering the thin rope just an inch closer to the bubbling, toxic liquid below.
"I have waited five long years to completely destroy your empire, Ethan," Salvatore gloated loudly.
"Now, I get to end your pathetic bloodline and take over the city in one single, glorious night."
Ethan stepped forward, raising his empty hands to show he was completely unarmed.
"Let the woman and the child walk away safely, Salvatore, and I will gladly surrender my life to you," Ethan offered without a single hesitation.
I sobbed uncontrollably, realizing the man who had abandoned me was now actively sacrificing his life for our family.
"That is incredibly noble, Ethan, but I do not leave loose ends," Salvatore sneered, shaking his head.
"You are all going to die here today to send a massive message to anyone who dares oppose the Romanos."
Salvatore raised a heavy pistol with his free hand, aiming it directly at Ethan's broad chest.
"Say goodbye to your secret little family, Blackwood," Salvatore whispered maliciously.
Before Salvatore could even squeeze the heavy trigger, a deafening explosion completely ripped the warehouse roof apart.
A massive, heavily armored tactical helicopter suddenly descended violently through the shattered skylight.
The deafening roar of the chopper blades whipped the toxic acid dangerously, creating a chaotic, blinding storm of chemical smoke.
Highly trained, elite mercenaries began rappelling rapidly down thick black ropes from the hovering aircraft.
They were not police officers, and they certainly were not working for the Romano family.
A man in full tactical combat gear kicked Salvatore fiercely in the chest, sending the mob boss crashing hard onto the metal walkway.
The mercenary expertly caught the rope holding Leo, pulling my crying son safely away from the boiling acid.
I fell to my knees in absolute, overwhelming relief as the heavily armed stranger secured my baby.

The mercenary slowly lowered his dark tactical mask, revealing a face that made Ethan's blood run completely cold.
"You always did need me to clean up your pathetic messes, little brother," the mercenary smirked arrogantly at Ethan.
