Chapter 9 - The Price of Survival

The heat from the burning estate washed over them, but the forest felt incredibly cold.
Julian stepped closer, keeping the sniper rifle perfectly steady on Elise’s head.
“I have to admit, Caleb, your new housekeeper is surprisingly resilient,” Julian mocked.
“But the game ends here.”
Caleb slowly pushed himself up from the mud, placing himself directly between Julian’s rifle and Elise.
“If you want my empire, Julian, take it,” Caleb said, his voice dangerously calm.
“Let her walk away. She is a civilian and means nothing to this war.”
Julian laughed, a twisted, ugly sound that echoed through the burning trees.
“She saw my face, Caleb. She knows I am alive. I don't leave loose ends.”
Elise stared at Julian’s heavy combat boots, her mind racing.
Julian was standing exactly three feet away from a pile of dead, wet leaves.
Elise recognized that specific pile of leaves.
It was covering an old, rusted iron drainage grate that she had been ordered to clean last week.
She knew the heavy iron cover wasn't bolted down; it was resting loosely over a twenty-foot concrete drop into the storm sewer.
Elise caught Caleb’s eye and gave a nearly imperceptible nod toward Julian’s feet.
Caleb, an expert at reading silent signals, understood instantly.
“You always were a coward, Julian,” Caleb taunted loudly, taking a sudden, aggressive step forward to draw his brother’s attention.
“You faked your own death because you were too weak to challenge me like a man!”
Julian’s face twisted in sheer rage.
“I am not weak!” Julian screamed, taking a furious step backward to maintain his firing distance.
His heavy combat boot landed directly on the pile of wet leaves.
Elise didn't hesitate.
She kicked a heavy, jagged rock as hard as she could, directly at the edge of the hidden iron grate.
The impact shifted the rusted metal cover just enough.
Julian’s weight caused the loose grate to instantly give way beneath him.
He screamed as he plunged downward into the dark, concrete abyss.
His chin clipped the edge of the metal pipe, knocking him unconscious before he even hit the water below.
The sniper rifle clattered harmlessly onto the wet grass.
Caleb stared at the dark hole in the ground, breathing heavily.
He turned to look at Elise, utter amazement written across his dirty, bleeding face.
“You really do pay attention to everything,” Caleb whispered.
Suddenly, the wail of police sirens and armored black SUVs echoed down the mountain road.
Caleb’s loyal backup forces had finally arrived, having seen the massive explosion from the city.
Heavily armed men swarmed the forest, pulling Julian from the sewer and securing the perimeter.
A tactical medic rushed over, wrapping a warm shock blanket around Elise’s trembling shoulders.
Caleb sat on the bumper of an armored SUV, allowing a medic to bandage his bleeding hands.
He looked across the chaotic scene and motioned for Elise to come to him.
She walked over, finally feeling the terrifying adrenaline start to fade.
“You saved my life three times tonight,” Caleb said softly, ensuring no one else could hear them.
“You will never have to clean another floor as long as you live. You are under my permanent protection, and I will ensure you are wealthier than you can imagine.”
