Chapter 6 - The Viper in the Nest

Caleb didn't turn around immediately.

He slowly closed Marcus’s lifeless eyes, his mind struggling to process the impossible truth.

Julian Rowan was his younger brother, a man who had supposedly died in a fiery car crash half a decade ago.

A cold, familiar voice echoed from the shadows of the dining room.

“Hello, brother.”

Julian stepped into the dim red light, dressed in black tactical gear and holding a suppressed weapon.

His face was scarred from the fire, giving him a twisted, monstrous appearance.

“You look like you've seen a ghost, Caleb,” Julian mocked, aiming his rifle directly at his brother’s chest.

Jonah raised his pistol to fire, but Julian was faster.

Julian shot Jonah in the shoulder, sending the security chief crashing backward into the heavy mahogany dining table.

Elise screamed, ducking behind a heavy velvet curtain as glass shattered around them.

“I spent five years hiding in the shadows, watching you build an empire that belonged to me,” Julian sneered.

Caleb slowly picked up his cane and forced himself to stand, refusing to show fear in front of the brother who had betrayed him.

“You tried to kill me with a wheelchair glitch to make it look like an accident,” Caleb said coldly.

“I wanted to take your throne without drawing the attention of the cartel bosses,” Julian admitted.

He glanced toward the curtain where Elise was hiding.

“But your observant little housekeeper ruined my quiet assassination.”

Julian raised his rifle, pointing it directly at the curtain.

“Now I have to do this the loud and messy way.”

Caleb reacted on pure instinct.

He hurled his heavy wooden cane directly at Julian’s face like a spear.

The heavy silver handle struck Julian right in the nose, throwing his aim off by a critical fraction of an inch.

The bullet ripped through the velvet curtain, missing Elise’s head by less than an inch.

“Run to the panic room!” Caleb roared, grabbing Elise by the arm and dragging her toward the hidden doorway.

Julian recovered quickly, firing wildly as Caleb and Elise dove into the reinforced steel chamber located behind the grand fireplace.

Caleb slammed his hand against the emergency lock button just as bullets sparked against the closing titanium door.

The heavy vault door sealed with a deafening, airtight hiss.

They were safe inside a room built to withstand a direct missile strike.

Elise collapsed onto the floor, gasping for air, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm in her chest.

Caleb leaned against the steel wall, completely exhausted and devoid of his usual commanding presence.

“We are safe in here,” Caleb whispered, trying to reassure her.

“The walls are three feet of solid titanium, and it has an independent air supply.”

Suddenly, the digital display panel on the wall flickered to life.

The bright green letters reading "SECURE" abruptly vanished.

They were replaced by bold, flashing red letters that spelled a single, terrifying word.

"PURGE."

A loud hissing sound erupted from the ventilation grates above their heads.

Thick, sweet-smelling green gas began pouring rapidly into the supposedly impenetrable sanctuary.
