Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The armored SUV drove smoothly down the winding mountain road, leaving the burning ruins of the estate far behind.
The cabin was warm and completely silent, insulated by thick bulletproof glass.
Caleb rested his head against the plush leather seat, his eyes closed in sheer exhaustion.
Elise sat across from him, sipping from a bottle of water provided by the tactical medics.
She felt a profound sense of relief washing over her tired body.
She had survived a mafia war, outsmarted trained assassins, and secured a future she had never dreamed possible.
For the first time in her life, she felt truly, untouchably safe.
Caleb’s secure smartphone suddenly vibrated on the center console, shattering the quiet peace of the car.
He opened his eyes, wincing in pain as he picked up the device.
It was an encrypted video message from an unknown number.
Caleb tapped the screen to play the video, and the bright light illuminated his pale face in the dark cabin.
Elise watched the screen over his shoulder, her curiosity piqued.
The video showed a small, dimly lit room with peeling wallpaper.
Tied to a wooden chair in the center of the room was an older woman, weeping silently, with a gag tied tightly around her mouth.
Elise’s stomach dropped into a bottomless pit of absolute horror.
It was her mother.
The camera slowly panned around to reveal the person recording the video.
It was Jonah, Caleb’s trusted security chief, looking completely unharmed and offering a chilling, wicked smile to the camera.
“You survived the house, Caleb,” Jonah’s voice whispered softly through the phone’s speakers.
“But the housekeeper is going to shoot you in the chest right now, or her mother dies.”
The video ended, leaving a terrifying, suffocating silence in the armored vehicle.
Caleb slowly lowered the phone, his eyes filled with a sudden, devastating realization.
He looked across the cabin at the woman who had just saved his life multiple times.
Elise was no longer holding the plastic water bottle.
Her hand was trembling violently, tears of sheer agony streaming down her dirt-streaked face.

She had quietly slipped a loaded pistol from the medic’s tactical bag while they were getting into the SUV.
Elise raised the gun in the dark cabin, pointing the barrel directly at Caleb’s heart.
