Chapter 4 - The Silent Test

Maeve stared down the dark barrel of the gun, knowing nobody would miss a runaway maid.
"Wait!" she screamed, dropping to her knees.
"If Margaret planted that tracker, it means she is sending hitmen here tonight!"
Gabriel's finger paused on the trigger.
Suddenly, the bedroom door opened again, and Elias rolled his wheelchair into the room.
He looked at the flashing tracker in Gabriel's hand.
"She is right, Gabriel," Elias said calmly.
Elias gestured for his security chief to lower the weapon.
He looked at Maeve, who was sobbing uncontrollably on the expensive rug.
"Stand up, Maeve," Elias commanded softly.
Maeve scrambled to her feet, wiping her face with the back of her hand.
"Sienna ran away because she thought I was weak," Elias said, tapping the armrest of his wheelchair.
"Margaret thinks she can easily assassinate a crippled man in his sleep."
Elias picked up the GPS tracker and threw it onto the floor right in front of Maeve.
"Prove to me that you are not one of them," Elias challenged her.
Maeve did not hesitate for a single second.
She raised the heel of her shoe and stomped down hard on the flashing device.
The plastic shattered, and the red light blinked out forever.
Elias smiled, genuinely impressed by her lack of hesitation.
He began to slowly turn the black onyx ring on his little finger.
"Turn around and look out the window, Maeve," Elias instructed quietly.
Maeve turned her back to him and looked out at the dark gardens.
Behind her, the sound of the wheelchair brakes clicking open echoed in the room.

Maeve heard the distinct rustle of fabric and the heavy sound of leather shoes stepping onto the hardwood floor.
Before she could process what was happening, the massive glass window in front of her exploded inward.
