Chapter 8 - The Countdown
Damon cautiously peered around the edge of the wooden crate.
Matteo was standing in the center of the clearing, lowering his smoking rifle.
The five mercenaries were dead on the wet concrete.
"That makes six," Matteo reported, counting the bodies.
Damon stood up, pulling Kate and her mother to their feet.
"Plus the four guards back at the estate," Damon calculated coldly.
"Ten men erased."
The Senator was crawling frantically toward the edge of the pier, desperately trying to escape in the fog.
Damon walked slowly toward him, his footsteps echoing like a ticking clock.
He grabbed the Senator by the collar of his ruined suit and hauled him to his feet.
"You have destroyed my career," the Senator sobbed pathetically, staring at his dead men.
"I haven't even started on your career," Damon whispered.
Matteo approached, holding the digital tablet he had used to track Kate's phone.
"Boss, I already forwarded the Senator's offshore banking records to the federal prosecutor," Matteo confirmed.
"He will be indicted for massive corruption by sunrise."
The Senator collapsed to his knees, realizing his life was entirely over.
"Please, spare my son," the Senator begged, pointing to where Preston had fallen.
Damon looked over to where Kate had struck Preston with her cast.
The ground was covered in blood, but Preston was gone.
"He ran into the container maze," Matteo realized, raising his weapon.
"Find him," Damon ordered his men.
"Fourteen men down, one left to go."
Kate stood near the SUV, wrapping her good arm around her mother's fragile waist.
She heard a faint scraping sound coming from the rusted container directly behind them.
Before she could turn around, an arm wrapped violently around her throat.
Preston dragged her backward into the shadows, his shattered jaw hanging at a grotesque angle.

He held his retrieved silver knife directly against her jugular vein.
"Back off, or I cut her throat!" Preston gurgled, blood pouring down his chin.
