Chapter 2 - The Missing Link

Damon held up a single finger, signaling for absolute silence.
He unbuttoned his tuxedo jacket, sliding his right hand toward the holster at his waist.
Matteo stepped to the side of the door, completely vanishing into the shadows.
"I said open the door, you pathetic little maid," Preston sneered from the hallway.
Damon reached out and unlocked the deadbolt with a swift, silent click.
He pulled the door open, stepping out into the hallway to block Preston's view of the room.
Preston stumbled backward, his arrogant smile vanishing instantly at the sight of the mafia boss.
"Mr. Blackwell," Preston stammered, frantically straightening his expensive tie.
"I was just looking for a restroom."
Damon looked down at the younger man with eyes entirely devoid of humanity.
"The restrooms are on the first floor, Preston," Damon stated coldly.
Preston swallowed hard, taking another step back.
"My mistake, sir, I must have gotten turned around after a few too many drinks."
Preston turned to walk away, desperate to escape the suffocating tension in the hallway.
"Before you go, Preston," Damon called out.
Preston froze in his tracks.
"Did you happen to find anything that doesn't belong to you tonight?" Damon asked.
Preston forced a laugh, pulling a cracked smartphone out of his pocket.
"Just this piece of junk I found on the floor in the library," Preston lied.
Kate gasped silently from inside the room.
It was her phone.
"Keep it," Damon said smoothly.
Preston nodded nervously and hurried toward the grand staircase.
Damon stepped back into the storage room and closed the door.
"He has my phone," Kate panicked, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.
"All of my mother's hospital information is on that screen."
Matteo pulled a laptop from his briefcase and began typing furiously.
"I am tracking the phone's GPS signal right now, Boss," Matteo said.
The blinking red dot on the screen moved rapidly away from the estate.

"He isn't going home," Matteo announced, his voice tight with concern.
"The signal is heading straight for St. Vincent's Hospital."
