Chapter 1 - The Intake File

Twenty-seven children went silent when I entered the room.

One little girl ran straight through them and wrapped herself around my leg.

Then she looked up with my eyes and said, “Daddy, you came back.”

The silence in the St. Margaret’s playroom became absolute and entirely suffocating.

I froze completely in the middle of the worn linoleum floor.

I was a man who controlled shipping empires and commanded fear across the entire Midwest.

Yet, a four-year-old child in a faded yellow dress had just paralyzed me completely.

My lead security guard, Nico, immediately stepped forward to pull her away from my tailored suit.

I raised my hand sharply to stop him directly in his tracks.

The little girl tilted her head, her wild dark curls spilling over her fragile shoulders.

She had the exact same shade of emerald green eyes as my missing wife.

Her tiny hands gripped the fabric of my trousers like a desperate lifeline.

I slowly dropped to one knee to look at her at eye level.

The resemblance was not just striking, it was mathematically impossible to be a coincidence.

Sister Mary hurried over with a terrified expression on her heavily wrinkled face.

She reached out to gently pry the child away while apologizing profusely to me.

She nervously said the child was confused and meant no disrespect to a generous donor.

I ignored the apology and asked the frightened nun for the girl's name.

Sister Mary hesitated nervously, wiping her shaking hands on her dark habit.

She finally whispered that the little girl's name was Sophia.

My heart violently stopped beating inside my chest.

My missing daughter's name was Sophia, and she would be exactly six years old right now.

I stood up abruptly and demanded to see the child's intake file immediately.

Sister Mary tried to refuse, citing strict state privacy regulations regarding orphans.

I calmly reminded her that my five million dollar donation could easily disappear before lunch.

The nun trembled terribly but led me down the hall into a small, dusty back office.

She unlocked a rusted metal filing cabinet and handed me a remarkably thin manila folder.

I opened it with hands that shook for the first time in over a decade.

I scanned the faded blue ink on the desperately crinkled first page.

The mother's name was listed clearly as Elena Rossi.

Elena Rossi was the fake name my wife Alina used when we traveled safely to Europe.

The intake notes stated the mother had dropped the child off three years ago in the middle of the night.

She had promised to return the next morning but completely vanished without a trace.

I flipped the page to read the emergency contact section at the very bottom.

My breath caught painfully in my throat as I read the name written in familiar handwriting.

The emergency contact for my abandoned daughter was Matteo Rizzo.

Matteo was my most trusted chief operating officer and my oldest friend in the syndicate.

He was the exact man who had repeatedly told me to stop looking for my missing family.

I aggressively pulled out my encrypted phone to call him and demand the truth.

Before I could even dial his number, a strange text message suddenly popped up on my bright screen.

May you like

It was sent from a completely untraceable international number.

The chilling message read, "I always knew you would find her eventually, Marco, but you and your men will never make it out of that orphanage alive."
