Chapter 4 - The River's Embrace

The compromised pilot smiled coldly, his finger slowly tightening on the trigger of the deadly suppressed weapon.

Elena froze, realizing that Victor Sterling's corrupt reach extended much further into her inner circle than she had ever feared.

Isabella, however, acted purely on the brutal, unhesitating survival instincts she had honed over decades of living on the dangerous streets.

She threw her entire body weight forward between the seats, slamming her bony elbow directly into the pilot's unprotected face.

The gun fired wildly as he fell backward, the stray bullet completely shattering the helicopter's primary electronic control panel.

Blaring warning alarms instantly filled the cabin as the damaged chopper began spinning wildly and uncontrollably over the dark East River.

The engines whined in a terrifying pitch, failing rapidly as the aircraft plummeted toward the icy, unforgiving black water below.

"We have to jump right now!" Elena screamed over the deafening, chaotic sound of the failing rotors and rushing wind.

She grabbed Isabella's filthy hand tightly, and together they threw themselves blindly out of the open side door of the plummeting helicopter.

They fell freely through the freezing night air for several terrifying seconds before hitting the surface of the icy river.

The brutal impact knocked all the breath from Elena's lungs, pulling her deep beneath the surface into the dark, crushing pressure.

She fought desperately against the freezing, violent current, kicking her legs until her muscles burned and she finally broke the surface.

She gasped greedily for air just as the helicopter exploded mid-air above them, sending a massive shockwave across the water.

Burning metal and shattered glass rained down into the river like a deadly meteor shower, hissing angrily as it hit the surface.

Elena frantically searched the dark, churning water until she found Isabella clinging weakly to a large piece of floating leather seating.

Together, they swam for what felt like hours, enduring exhausting, agonizing minutes to finally reach the muddy, desolate Brooklyn shoreline.

Shivering violently and soaked to the bone in freezing water, Elena led her sister through the shadows of the industrial district.

They walked to a hidden, heavily reinforced safehouse that Elena kept completely off the corporate books for absolute emergencies.

She punched a highly encrypted twelve-digit code into the rusted keypad and pushed the heavy iron door open, flicking on the single overhead light.

Her trusted Chief Operating Officer, Marcus, was already sitting calmly at the wooden table inside.

He was surrounded by three heavily armed cartel mercenaries, their laser sights immediately aiming directly at the two exhausted sisters.
