Chapter 6 - The Man in the Shadows
They hiked for six grueling hours. Leo’s legs burned, but he didn't complain. The soft, sheltered boy who had stood in the airport was quickly hardening, adopting his mother's grim determination.
They reached a lonely blacktop road just as the sun began to set. A beat-up pickup truck idled on the shoulder, its headlights off. Evelyn raised her weapon, shoving Leo behind her.
The truck door opened, and a tall, heavily scarred man stepped out, his hands raised in surrender.
"Put the gun down, Evie," the man said. His voice was gravelly and calm.
Evelyn lowered the rifle slowly, shock registering on her face for the first time. "Marcus?"
Marcus had been Vanguard’s head of security ten years ago—the man who was supposed to kill her. Instead, he had helped her fake her death because he, too, had discovered the horrific truth about the Icarus drug.

"Your ex-husband called in the cavalry," Marcus said, tossing a burner phone to Evelyn. "Arthur is officially the new CEO of Vanguard. He’s rushing the Icarus launch. It goes live to the FDA on Monday. He wanted you and the kid eliminated before the weekend was over to tie up loose ends."
Evelyn’s jaw set. "Then we don't run anymore, Marcus. We take the fight to him."
