Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

The silence in the concourse wasn’t peaceful; it was a vacuum, sucking the air from the lungs of everyone present.

The woman, wearing a tailored trench coat that looked completely out of place on a weary traveler, didn't break her gaze from the young boy. The boy, ten-year-old Leo, dropped the hand-drawn "Welcome Home" sign he had been holding. It hit the linoleum floor with a slap that echoed like a gunshot.

"Leo," the woman whispered. Her voice was barely a breath, yet it carried across the thirty feet separating them.

Before Leo could take a step, a man in a gray suit who had been pretending to read a newspaper near the baggage claim suddenly lunged. He wasn’t aiming for the woman; he was aiming for Leo.

Instinct, honed by a decade of hiding in the shadows, took over. The woman didn’t scream. She moved. She closed the distance in a blur, her heel connecting with the gray-suited man's knee with a sickening crunch. As the man crumpled, reaching for a weapon concealed in his jacket, she grabbed Leo’s small, trembling hand.

"Don't look back," she commanded, her voice now forged from steel.

The spell on the crowd broke. Chaos erupted. Screams echoed against the vaulted glass ceilings as security guards fumbled for their radios. But the woman and the boy were already gone, slipping through the panicked tide of bodies, plunging into the neon-lit depths of the airport parking garage. The mystery she carried had finally caught up to her, and the countdown had just begun.
