Chapter 4 - The Safehouse

By daybreak, they arrived at a rusted, forgotten cabin nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains. It was completely off the grid—no Wi-Fi, no cell service, surrounded by miles of dense, unforgiving pine forest.
Inside, the cabin was a fortress. Weapons, burner phones, and stacks of hard drives lined the walls. Evelyn immediately went to work, booting up an encrypted laptop that looked like a relic from the early 2000s.
"Are we going to live here now?" Leo asked, wrapping a heavy wool blanket around his shoulders. He looked incredibly small, a boy whose entire reality had been shattered in less than twelve hours.
"No," Evelyn said softly, pausing her typing to look at him. "We are going to destroy Vanguard. We are going to expose Arthur. And then, we are going to be free."
Suddenly, the encrypted laptop emitted a sharp, piercing beep. A red warning banner flashed across the screen: PROXIMITY BREACH.
Evelyn slammed the laptop shut and grabbed a heavy-duty rifle from the table. "They found us."
"How?" Leo panicked. "You said there was no signal!"
Evelyn grabbed Leo’s jacket and practically threw it at him. "You're wearing a tracker," she realized with horrifying clarity. "Your watch. Did Arthur give you that?"

Leo stared at the digital watch on his wrist, the one his father had given him for his tenth birthday just last week. "Yes."
"Take it off. Now."
