Chapter 4 - The Butler's Shadow

The documents in the safe were detailed architectural plans of the estate.

Someone had circled the east wing in bright red ink.

Notes in Richard's handwriting detailed the exact amount of accelerant needed for a structural fire.

Elara realized her own father had intentionally tried to burn her alive.

The wealth of the Harrington family was built on a massive insurance fraud scheme.

The fire had saved the family from utter bankruptcy twenty years ago.

Elara was just a tragic casualty meant to make the tragedy look authentic.

Tears of pure rage streamed down her face in the dark study.

She grabbed the files and stuffed them into her small canvas bag.

She turned to leave but froze in her tracks.

A tall figure was standing in the doorway blocking her only exit.

It was Thomas the elderly head butler of the Harrington Estate.

His face was completely obscured by the shadows of the hallway.

Elara clutched her bag to her chest and braced herself for the end.

She knew Thomas was fiercely loyal to Richard Harrington.

He had served the family for over forty years without a single complaint.

Thomas slowly reached out and turned on the desk lamp.

The warm light revealed a deeply sorrowful expression on his wrinkled face.

He looked at the open safe and then down at Elara.

He did not yell or call for the estate security team.

Instead he closed the heavy mahogany door quietly behind him.

Thomas stepped forward and asked Elara if she had finally found the truth.

Elara backed away and asked him how he knew who she was.

The old butler let out a heavy sigh that sounded like decades of guilt.

He revealed that he was the one who pulled her out of the burning nursery.

He was the one who hid her in the foster system to protect her from Richard.

Elara was entirely speechless as the pieces of her broken life fell into place.

Thomas warned her that taking those files out of the room was a death sentence.

He reached into his tailored suit pocket and pulled out a small encrypted hard drive.

He told her that the paper files were useless in a court of law.

He handed her the hard drive and said it contained all of Richard's offshore bank records.

Suddenly the estate's blaring security alarm shattered the midnight silence.

Red emergency lights began flashing violently outside the study window.

Thomas looked at her with wide eyes and said Richard had found them.
