Chapter 4 - The Masquerade of Vipers

Saturday night transformed the Montgomery Manor into a fever dream of excess. The grand ballroom was awash in gold light, filled with billionaires, corrupt politicians, and socialites, all hiding their faces behind elaborate, feathered Venetian masks.
Lyra navigated the crowd with a silver tray of champagne, her face bare, wearing a slightly modified, more formal version of her uniform. She was meant to blend into the wallpaper, and for the first two hours, she did. She served drinks, memorized the patrol routes of the extra security, and waited for the perfect moment.
At 11:30 PM, Silas Montgomery took the stage to give his annual toast. The room's attention shifted entirely to the patriarch.
Lyra slipped through a side door leading to the staff corridors. In the laundry room, hidden behind a stack of fresh linens, she retrieved a small, waterproof bag she had stashed earlier. Inside was a sleek, black evening gown and a highly detailed silver fox mask.
Within three minutes, the maid was gone. In her place stood a high-society phantom.
She re-entered the manor through the guest terrace, blending seamlessly into the crowd of masked elites. She moved with the grace of a born aristocrat, a ghost haunting the halls of her enemies. She bypassed the guards at the entrance to the west wing, walking with such terrifying confidence that they simply assumed she was a VIP guest looking for the restrooms.
She reached Silas’s private vault room. Her malware had already cracked the electronic keypad, but the vault itself required a biometric retinal scan.
Lyra didn't have Silas’s eye. But she had something better.
She pulled a high-resolution, 3D-printed contact lens from a sterile vial. She had acquired it at great cost, mapped from a high-def photograph of Silas she had taken from the intranet. She placed the lens over her own eye, wincing at the stinging pain.
She leaned into the scanner. A red laser swept over her eye.
Access Denied.
Her blood ran cold. She adjusted the lens, blinking back tears of irritation. She leaned in again.
Access Granted.
The heavy steel door hissed open. Lyra slipped inside, the darkness swallowing her. The vault was lined with gold bullion, bearer bonds, and stacks of cash, but she ignored all of it. She went straight to the black lockbox in the center. She picked the mechanical lock in under a minute.
Inside lay a thick, leather-bound book. The master ledger. The blueprint of Silas Montgomery's crimes, including the fraudulent contracts that had destroyed her father.
She shoved the ledger into a hidden pocket sewn into the lining of her gown. She had it. Twenty years of vengeance, finally in her hands.
But as she turned to leave, the vault door swung shut with a terrifying, definitive clang. The lights snapped on, blinding her.

Standing on the other side of the reinforced glass, holding a remote control, was Julian Montgomery. He was wearing a half-mask, smiling a cold, utterly vicious smile.
"I knew it," he mouthed through the glass.
