Chapter 3 - The Heir's Game

The next three weeks were a grueling test of endurance. Lyra scrubbed floors until her knees bled, polished silver until her reflection blurred, and played the perfect, invisible servant.

But at night, in the damp, freezing confines of her basement quarters, she was the architect of their doom. Her burner phone, hidden inside a hollowed-out bedpost, received encrypted data packets from the malware she had planted. Silas’s network was vast, hiding shell companies in the Caymans, illegal weapons manufacturing contracts, and a string of political briberies that could topple senators.

But she needed the physical proof. The master ledger.

Julian, however, had become a complication. Since their encounter in the study, he had started requesting her specifically.

"Lyra, bring my coffee to the terrace." "Lyra, organize my wardrobe." "Lyra, pour my scotch."

He was testing her. He would leave expensive watches lying around, wads of cash on his dresser, sensitive documents open on his bedside table. He was waiting for her to slip, waiting for her to steal or snoop so he could destroy her for his own amusement.

She never took the bait. She performed her duties flawlessly, remaining entirely unreadable.

One evening, as she was polishing his leather dress shoes in his expansive suite, Julian spoke from the velvet armchair where he was reading a financial report.

"You're an anomaly, Lyra."

"Sir?" she asked, not looking up from the shoe.

"The other maids, they look at me with either fear or greed. They want my money, or they are terrified of my temper," Julian said, tossing the report onto the glass table. "You look at me like I'm a piece of furniture. Or worse. Like I'm an obstacle."

"I assure you, sir, I only look at you as my employer," Lyra replied evenly.

Julian stood up, crossing the room. He grabbed her chin, forcing her to look up at him. His grip was entirely too tight. "I don't believe you. There is no history on you. Mrs. Vance’s background check says you were an orphan from Chicago, but you move like someone who has been trained. Who are you?"

Lyra’s heart hammered against her ribs, but her eyes remained dead, blank pools. "I am just a maid, Mr. Montgomery. If my service is unsatisfactory, I will pack my things."

Julian stared into her eyes for a long, agonizing moment. Finally, he released her chin. "My father is hosting the annual masquerade gala this Saturday. The entire political elite of the state will be here. You will serve drinks in the VIP lounge. Don't disappoint me."

May you like

"Yes, sir," Lyra said.

As Julian walked away, Lyra touched her jaw where his fingers had dug in. A masquerade gala. A house full of distracted guards, masked guests, and chaotic noise. It was the perfect cover. She didn't just have an obstacle anymore. She had a deadline.
