Chapter 1 - The Invisible Girl

The Montgomery Manor breathed like a living, predatory beast. It was a sprawling labyrinth of mahogany, imported Italian marble, and silence so profound it felt heavy on the lungs. Lyra moved through the cavernous hallways like a phantom. Her charcoal and ivory uniform, stiff with starch, rustled faintly, but she had already mastered the art of walking without making a sound.

In this house, being noticed was a dangerous game. The Montgomery family did not see the staff as human beings; they saw them as appliances. If an appliance made too much noise, it was discarded.

Lyra’s assigned sector for her first week was the east wing. It housed the grand library, a room containing thousands of first editions that the patriarch, Silas Montgomery, had never bothered to read. As she dusted the spines of leather-bound books, her eyes darted constantly, cataloging everything. The placement of the security cameras. The blind spots near the heavy velvet drapes. The patrol rotations of the armed private security guards who stalked the grounds like wolves.

"You missed a spot, girl."

The voice was like grinding glass. Lyra stopped, her duster hovering over a volume of Shakespeare. She turned slowly, keeping her eyes cast downward in the subservient posture she had practiced for months.

Standing in the doorway was Mrs. Vance, the head housekeeper. She was a severe woman with hair pulled back so tightly it looked painful, wielding her authority like a whip.

"My apologies, ma'am," Lyra murmured, her voice stripped of any accent, emotion, or identity.

"Mr. Montgomery expects perfection. If you cannot provide it, the cliffside is a long way down, and you will walk it tonight," Mrs. Vance sneered, inspecting the mahogany table. "Clean the study next. Do not touch the desk. Do not look at the papers. If you so much as breathe too heavily on his computer screen, I will know."

"Yes, ma'am."

As Mrs. Vance’s sharp footsteps faded down the corridor, Lyra lifted her head. Her dark eyes, usually carefully blank, flashed with a cold, predatory light. The study. That was exactly where she needed to be.

They thought she was just a desperate girl off the streets, grateful for minimum wage and a servant's cot in the basement. They didn't know her real name was Lyra Thorne. They didn't know that ten years ago, Silas Montgomery had orchestrated the hostile takeover that drove her father to suicide and left her mother to die penniless in a charity ward.

Lyra wasn't here to clean. She was here to tear the Montgomery empire down to its very foundation, brick by bloody brick. And she was going to start with Silas’s private study.
