Chapter 7 - The Lioness and the Heir

Julian stepped into the dim light of the bedroom, a twisted smile playing on his lips. He looked immaculate, completely unbothered by the trail of unconscious guards Clara had left in her wake.
"I have to admit, Clara, I'm impressed," Julian sneered, keeping the gun leveled at her chest. "The bank, the gala, and now sneaking into a fortified island. You're far more resourceful than the fragile little housewife I married."
Clara stood slowly, her body shielding Mia entirely. Her hand hovered inches from her sidearm, but Julian’s gun was already drawn. She couldn't risk a shootout with Mia in the room.
"Let her go, Julian," Clara said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "You don't care about Mia. You only care about winning. You've proven your point. Now let us walk away."
Julian chuckled, shaking his head. "You still don't get it. This was never about winning an argument. This is about legacy. My father demands an heir. Mia belongs to the Hawthorne bloodline. She is property, Clara. And you are trespassing."
"She's a child!" Clara roared, her composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "She's your daughter, and you treat her like a corporate asset!"
"She is an asset," Julian corrected coldly. "And you have become a liability. Did you really think you could just walk out of here? The alarms have already been tripped. My father’s private army is closing in on this room as we speak. I'm going to shoot you, Clara, and I'm going to tell the police you broke in like a deranged stalker and I defended my family."
He cocked the hammer of the gun.
"Mommy..." Mia whimpered, burying her face into Clara's leg.
Clara looked at Julian. She looked past the arrogant smirk, past the expensive suit, and saw the weak, pathetic man hiding beneath his father's wealth. She didn't feel fear anymore. She felt an overwhelming, lethal clarity.
"You're right about one thing, Julian," Clara whispered softly. "I'm not the fragile housewife you married. But you're wrong about the alarms."
Julian frowned. "What?"
"The alarms didn't trip because you found me," Clara said, a dark smile slowly spreading across her face. "They tripped because of what Elias did to your security grid five minutes ago."
At that exact moment, every light in the Blackwood Compound shattered simultaneously.
Total, suffocating darkness swallowed the room.
Julian panicked, firing blindly into the dark. The bullet shattered a mirror behind Clara. In the chaos, Clara moved with lethal precision. She dropped to a crouch, swept her leg out, and connected hard with Julian's knees.
He cried out, collapsing to the floor. The gun clattered away in the darkness. Clara was on top of him in a second. She drove her elbow into his jaw, the sickening crunch of bone echoing in the dark. Julian went completely limp.

Clara scooped Mia up into her arms. "Close your eyes, baby. Don't look."
She grabbed Julian's gun from the floor, activated her shoulder light, and sprinted out of the room. The compound was in total chaos, guards screaming in the dark, emergency klaxons blaring. The empire was falling, and Clara was walking out of the wreckage with her treasure.
