Chapter 4 - The Gala of Vipers

News of the catastrophic server failure at Hawthorne Continental sent shockwaves through the financial elite. The official story was a "technical malfunction," but the panic in the aristocratic circles was palpable. Silas Hawthorne was a man who traded on the illusion of invulnerability. Clara had just shattered that illusion.

But money wasn't enough to get Mia back. She needed leverage. She needed the Black Ledger—the physical book where Silas kept his blackmail on the judges, politicians, and police commissioners.

"The ledger isn't in a vault," Elias said, pointing to a holographic projection in their safehouse. "It's on him. Always. Silas wears a customized titanium briefcase handcuffed to his wrist during high-risk events. And tonight is the annual Hawthorne Zenith Gala."

Clara stared at the projection. "He'll be surrounded by hundreds of guests and dozens of guards. We can't take it by force."

"No," Elias grinned, tossing Clara a sleek, glittering evening gown. "We take it with sleight of hand. I’ve forged you an identity. Tonight, you are Countess Elena Rostova, a reclusive Russian oil heiress looking to invest. They'll be begging to talk to you."

Two hours later, Clara stepped out of a rented Rolls Royce in front of the city's grandest museum. The Zenith Gala was a sickening display of excess. Women dripped in conflict diamonds, and men in tailored suits laughed over champagne, oblivious to the lives they ruined to pay for it all.

Clara moved through the crowd with predatory grace. Her dark hair was pinned up, and a delicate diamond mask concealed the upper half of her face. She spotted Julian almost immediately. He looked haggard, his usual arrogance replaced by the frantic energy of a man whose inheritance was actively burning to the ground.

Clara avoided him, keeping her eyes fixed on her true target: Silas.

The patriarch was holding court near a massive ice sculpture, the silver briefcase securely attached to his left wrist. Clara took a deep breath, channeled her inner aristocrat, and approached.

"Mr. Hawthorne," Clara purred, letting a flawless, slight Russian accent slip into her voice. "I have heard so much about your... robust financial strategies."

Silas turned, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took her in. "And you are?"

"Countess Rostova. I was hoping to discuss a merger. My resources, your infrastructure."

Greed flickered in Silas's eyes. Despite the crisis, he could never resist new capital. "A pleasure, Countess. Perhaps we could speak in private?"

He led her to a VIP alcove off the main hall. Clara sat close to him, her movements calculated and slow. As Silas began to pitch his shell companies, Clara slipped a tiny, custom-built magnetic disrupter from her clutch.

"I must admit, Mr. Hawthorne, I prefer my investments to be... secure," Clara said, leaning in, her hand brushing against the briefcase under the table. She activated the disrupter. The localized magnetic field scrambled the electronic locking mechanism of the handcuff.

With a faint click, the cuff snapped open.

Silas didn't notice. He was too busy looking into Clara's eyes. "My security is absolute, Countess."

"I'm sure it is," Clara smiled. With lightning speed, she swapped the heavy titanium case with a visually identical replica Elias had prepared, sliding the real one into a hidden compartment under the velvet bench.

"Excuse me for a moment," Clara said, standing up smoothly. "I need to powder my nose. We will conclude our business shortly."

She walked away, her heart hammering against her ribs. She didn't look back until she reached the service elevators, where Elias was waiting in a catering uniform. He grabbed the hidden briefcase from her, his eyes wide.

"You got it?" he whispered.

"I got it. Let's get out of here before he notices."

They made it to the underground parking garage just as the deafening alarms of the museum blared to life. Silas had realized he was holding a fake. Clara smiled in the darkness. The king was stripped of his armor.
