Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The safehouse was entirely silent save for the furious clacking of Elias’s keyboard. The Black Ledger was exactly what they hoped for—a devastating catalog of corruption. Video files, bank transfers, explicit photographs; it was enough to put Silas Hawthorne and half the city's elite in federal prison for three lifetimes.

But Clara wasn't looking at the blackmail. She was scouring the pages for a single name.

"Found it," Elias breathed, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the monitor. "There's a recurring expense account buried in the back pages. It’s routing money to an off-the-books property. The Blackwood Compound. It's a fortified island estate off the coast of Maine."

Clara stood up, her jaw set. "That's where she is. That's where they took Mia."

"Clara, look at the satellite imagery," Elias warned, pulling up a map. "It's an island fortress. There's only one bridge, heavily guarded. Anti-aircraft batteries on the roof. Roving patrols with attack dogs. Silas isn't just hiding her; he's daring anyone to try and take her."

"I don't care if he has an army," Clara said, grabbing her tactical vest. "I'm bringing my daughter home tonight."

Elias sighed, knowing there was no stopping her. "Fine. But we can't go in hot. The bridge is rigged with explosives. If they see us coming, they'll blow it and lock down the island. We need a ghost entry."

"How?"

"The island relies on a massive underwater intake pipe for its desalination plant. It pulls water from the bay. The grating is old. If I can hack the plant's turbine schedule, I can shut off the intake for exactly twelve minutes. You’ll have to swim through the pipe, cut the grate, and climb up the maintenance shaft into the compound’s basement."

Clara looked at the brutal, freezing waters of the Maine coastline on the map. It was a suicide mission for anyone else. For a mother, it was just a commute.

"Get the gear," Clara ordered.

By midnight, they were hovering off the coast of the island in a silenced zodiac boat. The water was pitch black and freezing. Clara was sealed in a drysuit, an oxygen tank strapped to her back, and a waterproof tactical bag secured to her chest.

"Turbines are powering down... now," Elias whispered over the comms. "You have twelve minutes, Clara. If you're still in the pipe when they turn back on, the suction will crush you."

Clara nodded, pulling her mask down. She slipped silently into the freezing abyss. The cold was shocking, seeping through the suit instantly. She activated her shoulder light, the beam cutting through the murky water until it hit a massive, rusted steel grate.

She pulled an underwater thermal cutter from her bag. Ten minutes.

Sparks flew wildly in the water as the cutter bit into the thick steel. Her muscles burned, her lungs fighting the compressed air. She thought of Mia crying out for her. The thought fueled her arms.

With a brutal kick, the grate broke free, sinking into the dark. Clara swam into the claustrophobic concrete pipe. It was completely dark.

Five minutes.

She swam faster, the walls of the pipe scraping against her tank. She could feel a low vibration building in the water. The turbines were prepping to restart.

Two minutes.

She saw a faint red light above her—the maintenance shaft. She swam upwards, breaking the surface of the water inside a dimly lit concrete cylinder. She scrambled up the rusted iron ladder, pulling herself onto the grated floor of the basement just as a deafening roar echoed below her. The water violently churned, the suction powerful enough to rip the ladder off the wall.

She lay on the cold steel floor, gasping for air. She was inside.
