Chapter 7 - The Hunted

Alarms began to blare throughout the Vanderbilt Manor. Red emergency lights pulsed in the hallways. Julian had realized the safe was breached.

"The roof," Isabel shouted over the sirens. "If we go down, we run into his guards. We go up to the helipad. I have a chopper waiting on standby."

They raced up the final flight of stairs to the roof access door. The cold night air hit them like a physical blow as they burst out onto the flat, sprawling rooftop of the manor. Below them, the estate was surrounded by flashing police lights. The authorities hadn't fallen for the bomb threat; Isabel’s dead-man switch had triggered a silent alarm to the FBI.

But the helicopter wasn't there yet.

They stood on the edge of the helipad, the wind whipping their ruined dresses around them.

The heavy roof door kicked open.

Julian Vance stepped out into the night. His tuxedo was disheveled, his eyes wild with the manic desperation of a trapped animal. He held the revolver he had taken from the biometric safe.

"It’s over, Julian!" Isabel yelled over the wind. "The FBI is downstairs. They have the perimeter surrounded!"

Julian raised the gun, aiming it at Isabel. "They don't have the ledger. And if you're dead, it's your word against mine. A deranged ex-wife who faked her own death."

He turned his gaze to Genevieve. "Genevieve. Bring me the ledger. Do it, and I will still save your family. I will give you everything. But if you stand with her, you die with her."
