Chapter 5 - The Master’s Sanctuary

Julian’s study was a monument to his ego. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, a massive mahogany desk, and a roaring fireplace. But Julian wasn't there; he had moved to the communications room to contact his offshore bankers.
"The safe is behind the portrait of his grandfather," Genevieve said, rushing to the oil painting. She swung it open, revealing a sleek, steel biometric vault.
Isabel stared at the retinal scanner. "It requires his eye, Genevieve. We can't open it."
"Julian is a creature of habit and paranoia," Genevieve said, pulling a specialized UV light pen from a desk drawer. "He doesn't trust retinal scans completely. He insisted the manufacturer install a manual override keypad in case of an emergency."
She shone the UV light on the keypad beneath the scanner. Four numbers glowed slightly with residual oil from Julian's fingertips.
"1, 4, 7, 9," Genevieve muttered. "We have twenty-four possible combinations. If we get it wrong three times, the system locks down permanently."
Isabel’s hands shook. "Try the year he launched his first stolen ship. 1947? 1974?"
"No," Genevieve said, her fingers hovering over the keys. "Julian only cares about one thing. Himself."
She typed: 9-4-7-1.
The keypad beeped green. The heavy steel bolts retracted, and the safe swung open.
"How did you know?" Isabel gasped.
"It’s his birthdate backwards," Genevieve scoffed. "Told you. Arrogant."
Inside the safe sat stacks of cash, a loaded revolver, and a thick, black leather-bound ledger. Isabel grabbed the ledger, flipping through the pages.
"This is it," Isabel whispered, tears of vindication pooling in her eyes. "Shipments of illegal arms to syndicates in Eastern Europe. Hidden beneath my company's agricultural manifests. This will put him away for consecutive life sentences."

Suddenly, the unmistakable click of a gun being cocked echoed through the study.
"Put it down, ladies."
