Chapter 3 - The Unseen Enemy

Elena stared at the horrific scene, her hands shaking violently.
She had prepared herself for corporate espionage, but she had never prepared for murder.
Marcus’s dead eyes stared blankly at the ornate ceiling pattern.
She noticed a small, folded piece of paper clutched tightly in his stiff fingers.
Elena carefully pried the note from his hand and opened it.
The paper contained a string of six numbers, which she recognized instantly as a vault combination.
Before she could memorize the sequence, the radio on Marcus's belt suddenly crackled to life.
"Target is on the forty-second floor, lock down the entire perimeter," a harsh voice commanded over the static.
Elena panicked as she heard the heavy boots of a tactical team echoing from the stairwell.
She sprinted down the hallway, desperately trying every door handle in sight.
They were all electronically locked from the main security mainframe.
The armed guards burst through the stairwell doors, raising their assault rifles toward her.
Elena threw herself around the corner, pressing her back against the cold wall.
She had nowhere left to run.
Suddenly, a hidden maintenance panel in the wall slid open beside her.
A pair of strong arms grabbed her waist and yanked her violently into the dark ventilation shaft.
The panel snapped shut just as the guards rounded the corner.
Elena gasped for air, turning in the cramped space to face her mysterious savior.
The stranger flicked on a flashlight, illuminating a handsome but deeply scarred face.

He did not look like a friend.
He pressed the barrel of a suppressed pistol directly against her forehead.
