Chapter 5 - The Burn Notice

The sheer magnitude of the betrayal hit me exactly like a physical punch to the chest.

General Vance was the specific man who had personally recruited me out of the elite military academy twenty years ago.

He was the exact person I was planning to legally call for emergency tactical backup in the morning.

If I had contacted him, he would have handed Emily and me directly over to the Prescotts on a silver platter.

I quickly downloaded all the incriminating digital evidence onto a highly encrypted external hard drive.

I knew the classified military network would automatically alert Vance that someone was accessing his financial records.

We had mere minutes to evacuate the bunker before a rogue strike team arrived to silence us permanently.

I geared up in a black tactical uniform and loaded three spare magazines directly into my service weapon.

I handed Emily a lightweight Kevlar vest and told her to stay exactly two steps behind me at all times.

We moved rapidly up the heavy concrete stairwell toward the reinforced steel blast doors of the main exit.

Just as my hand touched the locking mechanism, I heard the distinct sound of tactical boots moving on the gravel outside.

I peered through the microscopic security lens and saw twelve heavily armed Special Forces operatives surrounding the bunker.

They were aggressively setting massive breaching explosive charges directly on the reinforced steel door.

There was absolutely no way I could win a direct firefight against twelve highly trained killers in a confined space.

I grabbed Emily and pulled her back down into the depths of the underground facility.

I knew there was an old emergency ventilation shaft that led directly to a hidden exit a mile away in the woods.

As we reached the maintenance room, a loud hissing sound echoed through the metal air ducts.

The strike team had realized the door was too thick, so they were pumping lethal nerve gas into the bunker's ventilation system.

I frantically searched the dusty supply crates and managed to find only one functioning military gas mask.

I strapped the life-saving mask tightly onto Emily's face, leaving myself completely unprotected against the deadly toxins.
