Chapter 10 - The Caldwell Legacy

The moment Evelyn gave the lethal order, I kicked the heavy metal table violently forward.
It slammed directly into Vance's knees, knocking him completely off balance before he could pull the trigger.
I lunged out of my chair, wrapping my hands fiercely around the barrel of his gun and twisting it upward.
The weapon discharged loudly, shattering the massive glass window that separated the office from the hallway.
The catastrophic glass break immediately triggered the estate's automated security lockdown.
Heavy steel blast doors slammed shut across the exit, trapping Evelyn entirely inside the corridor while we remained in the office.
I ripped the gun from Vance's hands and struck him across the jaw, knocking him out completely.
I rushed over to Grace, tearing the remaining restraints from her arms and pulling her into a desperate, crushing embrace.
Evelyn pounded furiously on the reinforced glass from the outside, screaming completely unheard threats as she held my crying son.
"The police are already here!" Martin's voice suddenly crackled over the room's intercom system.
Red and blue sirens flooded the underground hallway as heavily armed tactical officers breached the corridor and swiftly surrounded my mother.
An officer gently took the baby from Evelyn's rigid arms before aggressively wrestling her to the concrete floor in handcuffs.
Grace and I rushed out into the hallway, collapsing into tears as the officer finally placed our beautiful, healthy son into our arms.
We watched in absolute silence as Evelyn was dragged away in chains, her tyrannical empire completely dismantled in a single night.
Three weeks later, we settled into our new home in Colorado, completely safe and far away from my mother's toxic reach.
Grace finally looked entirely peaceful as she rocked our healthy baby boy to sleep in the afternoon sun.
Then the doorbell rang, abruptly shattering the quiet, perfect evening.

I opened the heavy front door to find a black envelope sitting ominously on the welcome mat.
Inside was a single photograph of Grace taken through our new bedroom window just moments ago.
