Chapter 10 - The Exit

Silas didn't stay to watch them mingle in terror. He turned his back on the wealthiest people in the world and walked toward the exit.

As he approached the double doors, Mr. Halloway was waiting, holding a silver tray with a single, perfectly chilled glass of water. Silas took it, took a sip, and set it back down.

"Excellent event, Arthur," Silas said.

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Halloway replied, his voice still shaking slightly, though a faint smile played on his lips. He had never liked Marcus Sterling. "Will you be needing a suite for the night?"

"No. I prefer my own bed. Just make sure the staff is paid triple overtime for dealing with this crowd."

"Already done, sir."

Silas walked out of the ballroom, leaving the oppressive, gilded cage behind. He walked through the lavish lobby, his work boots completely silent on the marble. As he reached the front entrance, he saw Bruno standing by the valet stand, looking incredibly nervous.

Bruno stiffened as Silas approached. He looked like a man expecting to be fired on the spot.

"Mr. Vance," Bruno said quickly. "I... I want to apologize again for earlier. I was just doing my job, but I should have been more respectful."

Silas stopped in front of the massive bouncer. He reached into the pocket of his scuffed trousers and pulled out a heavy, solid gold money clip. He peeled off a crisp hundred-dollar bill and handed it to Bruno.

"You were doing exactly what you were paid to do, Bruno," Silas said with a genuine, faint smile. "You checked the ticket. You kept the trash out. You’re good at your job."

Bruno stared at the bill, then up at Silas, profound relief washing over his face. "Thank you, sir. Thank you."

Silas stepped out into the cool night air. The valets rushed to offer him a limousine, but he waved them off. He zipped up his plain brown coat against the wind, stepped off the curb, and began the long walk home, disappearing into the city he secretly owned.
