Chapter 6 - Pressure Drop

The descent into the Mariana Trench was a journey into an alien world.

Inside the claustrophobic, titanium-reinforced cockpit of the Abyss Walker, the only sound was the rhythmic ping of the sonar and the heavy, mechanical breathing of the life support systems. Elias sat in the co-pilot seat, watching the depth gauge plummet.

3,000 meters. 5,000 meters. 8,000 meters.

The ocean outside the thick acrylic viewport went from deep blue to absolute, crushing blackness. The pressure outside the hull was immense, capable of crushing a nuclear submarine like an empty soda can.

"We are entering the abyssal zone," Elena announced, her hands flying across the navigation panels. "The water temperature is dropping fast. We are approaching the coordinates of the sub-glacial cavern."

Elias stared out into the void, gripping the armrests of his seat. "Keep your eyes on the sonar. The Titan has a four-hour head start, but they’re a heavy-lift vessel. We’re faster. We should be right on their tail."

Suddenly, the sonar screen flared bright red. A massive, jagged structure appeared on the digital readout.

"There it is," Elena whispered. "The cavern entrance."

She activated the exterior floodlights. The blinding halogen beams cut through the eternal darkness, revealing a sight that defied all logic.

Jutting out of the rocky ocean floor was a towering, cathedral-like structure made entirely of glowing, blue ice. It shouldn't have existed. At this depth, near volcanic thermal vents, the water should have melted any ice instantly. But this ice was different. It fed on the heat of the vents, growing stronger, towering hundreds of feet high like an underwater fortress of glass.

"The Sculptor's domain," Elias murmured, mesmerized and horrified by the unnatural beauty.

"I have a visual on the Titan," Elena said, her voice snapping him back to reality.

Resting on the ocean floor, right at the entrance of the ice cathedral, was the massive rogue submersible. Its external mechanical arms were extended, drilling into the glowing blue ice, extracting massive, cylindrical core samples.

"They're harvesting," Elias said, his tactical mind taking over. "Dock us on the upper ridge of the cavern. We need to go out there."

"Out there?" Elena looked at him like he was insane. "Elias, the pressure will kill us instantly."

"Not if we use the Vanguard Exosuits," Elias said, pointing to the rear airlock chamber where two heavy, mechanized deep-sea diving suits hung from the ceiling. "We don't have torpedoes on this science vessel. If we want to stop them, we have to do it by hand."
