Chapter 2 - The Architect's Vault

Elias didn't wait for the forensics team to finish their agonizingly slow work. By midnight, he was standing in the opulent, multi-million-dollar penthouse of Magnus Blackwood, overlooking the glittering skyline of Dubai.

Magnus was a titan of industry, a man whose wealth could buy small countries. He sat behind a monolithic desk of black marble, swirling a glass of Scotch. He looked entirely unfazed by the horrific death of his driver.

"You have a reputation for discretion, Elias," Magnus said smoothly, taking a sip. "That is why I bypassed Interpol and called you."

"Your driver was turned into a human icicle in the middle of a desert," Elias retorted, slamming his hands on the marble desk. "That’s not a standard hit. That requires technology that doesn't exist. Or biology that shouldn't."

Magnus smiled, a thin, predatory stretching of his lips. He pressed a button under his desk. The massive floor-to-ceiling windows darkened, and a holographic projection illuminated the center of the room. It displayed a topographical map of the Mariana Trench, but specifically focusing on a deep, uncharted sub-ridge in the Arctic Circle.

"Nineteen years ago, a Russian deep-sea drilling expedition breached a sub-glacial cavern in the Bering Strait," Magnus explained, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the hologram. "They found something dormant. A biological anomaly. An organism that doesn't consume flesh—it consumes thermal energy. It absorbs heat at an atomic level, leaving only crystalized, frozen husks behind. The Russians called it The Sculptor."

Elias stared at the projection. "The dockworker. The file the maritime police buried."

"Exactly," Magnus nodded. "The Russians sealed the cavern, terrified of what they had unleashed. But my company has spent the last decade searching for it. The Sculptor’s biological structure could revolutionize cryogenic technology, quantum computing, and limitless energy storage. My driver, Marcus, was the head of my deep-sea logistics. He had the coordinates to the cavern."

"And someone killed him for them," Elias deduced, his mind racing.

"No," Magnus said quietly. "Someone killed him because they already went down there. They breached the cavern a week ago, Elias. The organism is loose. And whoever brought it to the surface just weaponized it in my city."
