Chapter 5 - The Vanguard Protocol

Outpost Echo was a marvel of illegal engineering. Built directly into the glacial shelf, the facility was a labyrinth of steel corridors, humming generators, and heavy blast doors. But as Elias and Elena stepped off the transport and entered the main hangar, the silence was deafening.
There was no greeting party. No technicians running diagnostic checks on the submersibles.
"Power is running at bare minimum," Elias noted, drawing his weapon and clicking on the tactical flashlight attached to the barrel. The beam cut through the dim, emergency-red lighting of the hangar.
They moved cautiously through the facility. The air was unnaturally cold, even for a base in the Arctic. As they reached the central command room, the horror of what had transpired became explicitly clear.
The room was a graveyard.
A dozen technicians and security personnel were frozen in place. They looked like perfectly sculpted glass statues, their faces locked in expressions of absolute terror. The same iridescent blue veins pulsed faintly beneath their crystallized skin. The room was so cold that Elias’s breath froze instantly, falling as snow onto his tactical vest.
Elena covered her mouth, her eyes wide with horror. "They're... they're all dead. Project Leviathan must have been here. They breached containment."
Elias stepped over a frozen guard, moving toward the main terminal. The screens were frosted over, but he managed to wipe one clear. He pulled up the launch logs.
"They didn't just breach containment," Elias said, his voice hard. "They took the Titan, the facility's heavy-lift submersible. They launched it four hours ago. They’re heading straight down to the source cavern to harvest the motherlode."
"If they bring a full colony of the organism to the surface, they won't just freeze a city," Elena warned, stepping up beside him. "The organism will spread through the ocean currents. It will trigger a localized ice age across the entire northern hemisphere. We have to stop them."
Elias looked through the reinforced glass of the command center overlooking the moon pool—a massive, circular opening in the floor leading directly to the freezing ocean depths. Suspended above the dark water was a second submersible, a sleek, predatory-looking vessel named the Abyss Walker.

"Do you know how to pilot that thing?" Elias asked.
Elena looked at the submersible, then back at Elias, her jaw set with fierce determination. "I helped design it. Let's go hunting."
