Chapter 5 - The Price of Loyalty

Mark stared down the dark barrel of the shotgun with absolute, paralyzing betrayal.
He asked his oldest friend how he could possibly sell his soul to a violent criminal.
David refused to make eye contact, his hands trembling slightly on the weapon.
He explained that Arthur's wealth and influence were completely impossible to escape.
Mark slowly raised his hands, pretending to completely surrender to the armed man.
He knew he only had one desperate chance to save his son from being handed over to the syndicate.
In a flash of pure adrenaline, Mark lunged forward and grabbed the hot barrel of the shotgun.
He twisted the weapon violently upward just as David reflexively pulled the trigger.
The deafening blast shattered the wooden ceiling beams above them.
Mark delivered a devastating strike to David's throat, sending the man collapsing to the floor in agony.
He quickly stripped the shotgun from his former friend's grasp and checked the ammunition.
He grabbed Jake by the hand and rushed out the back door of the cabin into the freezing night.
They ran toward David's parked pickup truck, hoping the keys were still inside.
Mark smashed the driver's side window with the butt of the shotgun and unlocked the door.
He hotwired the ignition with skills he had hoped to never use again.
The old engine sputtered and roared to life just as headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.
Three black SUVs belonging to Arthur's mercenaries were speeding toward the cabin.
Mark slammed the truck into gear and tore across the muddy lawn to evade the blockade.
Bullets began tearing through the metal frame of the truck as they sped back onto the main road.
He drove with reckless desperation, swerving to avoid the incoming gunfire.
He managed to lose the pursuing vehicles in a maze of narrow, winding mountain dirt roads.
He pulled the damaged truck into an abandoned barn to hide until the sun came up.
Mark hugged his son tightly, realizing they were now entirely alone against an army.
He reached into his pocket to pull out the burner phone to check the map for the slaughterhouse.

Instead of a map, the screen displayed a live video feed of his wife tied to a metal chair.
Arthur stepped into the frame, smiling coldly as he held a razor-sharp hunting knife to her throat.
