Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The corrupt agent silently stepped back as Arthur gripped the cold steel of the hidden pistol.
Before the old crime lord could even raise the weapon, a sharp gunshot echoed from the doorway.
The corrupt agent collapsed to the floor instantly, shot cleanly through the shoulder by the lead FBI director.
The director walked into the room, kicking the dropped weapon away and smiling coldly at the ruined crime boss.
He informed Arthur that they had completely purged the agency of all his paid informants and moles.
Arthur screamed in pure, impotent rage as he was forcefully shackled to the heavy hospital bed.
The core conflict was finally, permanently resolved, completely destroying the syndicate from the ground up.
In exchange for the full decryption of the flash drive, the FBI granted the family complete immunity and brand-new identities.
Six peaceful months passed by in a beautiful blur of healing, quiet mornings, and unbroken safety.
They now lived in a stunning, sun-drenched beach house located in a quiet coastal town in a different country.
Mark stood barefoot on the warm white sand, watching his son laugh and chase the gentle ocean waves.
The bruises on the boy's body had faded completely, leaving nothing but the happy, energetic spirit of a child.
His wife walked up beside him, resting her head softly on his strong, relaxed shoulder.
They smiled together at the brilliant orange sunset, completely free from the violent trauma that had haunted them.
They had finally found the happy, safe life they had fought so desperately to achieve.
Mark kissed her forehead softly and turned to walk back to the beach house to check the afternoon mail.
He opened the metal mailbox and found a single, unmarked black envelope resting at the bottom.
He tore it open and pulled out a high-resolution photograph taken just moments ago of his son playing in the sand.

Attached to the terrifying photograph was a handwritten note inscribed with dark, blood-red ink.
The note simply read, "Did you really think I was his only biological father?"
