Chapter 2 - The Hidden Vault

Grace stumbled down the narrow, dimly lit staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Luca followed closely behind, the heavy steel door sealing shut above them with a deafening thud.
Titan trotted ahead, his thick paws making no sound on the cold concrete steps.
They reached the bottom, stepping into a high-tech panic room lined with security monitors and weapons.
Grace leaned against a steel table, trying to process the absolute chaos of the last ten minutes.
"My father was a mechanic," Grace said, her voice shaking uncontrollably.
"He couldn't even afford our electric bill, let alone steal from a cartel."
Luca walked over to a metal cabinet and pulled out two loaded handguns.
"Samuel Walker was a mechanic, yes," Luca replied calmly.
"But he was also the best getaway driver and vaultcracker the Italian syndicate ever employed."
Grace felt the blood drain completely from her face.
Her sweet, gentle father, who rescued stray dogs and fixed neighborhood bicycles, was a career criminal.
"He saved my life when a rival gang ambushed my car twelve years ago," Luca continued.
"He pulled me from the burning wreckage, but it exposed his identity to the Rossi family."
Grace stared at the glowing security monitors, watching armed men flood the beautiful courtyard above them.
"So he faked his death to protect me," she whispered, the devastating truth finally clicking into place.
"He didn't just fake his death, Grace," Luca corrected her, stepping closer.
"He stole the Rossi family's master ledger, a black book containing the names of every corrupt judge and politician in the state."
Titan whined softly, nudging Grace's hand with his wet nose.
"I don't have a black book," Grace said desperately.
"I haven't seen anything like that in my entire life."
Luca looked down at the massive black mastiff sitting between them.
"Samuel didn't leave it in your house, Grace."
May you like
Luca slowly reached toward the thick leather collar around Titan's neck.
"He hid it in the one place he knew you would eventually recognize."
