Chapter 10 - Checkmate

Two uniformed police officers walked through the open front doors, their expressions strictly business.

"We have a warrant for the arrest of Susan Davis and Marlene Jenkins on charges of grand larceny and wire fraud," the lead officer announced.

My mother let out a high-pitched shriek as the officer firmly placed her hands behind her back and clicked the metal handcuffs into place.

Aunt Marlene didn't even fight; she just stared at the floor in silent defeat as she was arrested.

"You can't do this to me!" my mother screamed over her shoulder as they dragged her down the steps.

"I am your mother, Emily, tell them to stop!"

I stood next to Alexander, my hand resting protectively over my stomach.

"You stopped being my mother the day you made me hate myself," I replied quietly, my voice steady and completely devoid of fear.

The heavy wooden doors shut, and an immediate wave of peace washed over the entire estate.

Three hours later, the string quartet played a beautiful melody as Chloe walked down the aisle in her stunning white gown.

Lucas stood at the altar, tears of pure joy in his eyes as he looked at the woman he was about to marry.

I sat in the front row, holding Alexander's hand tightly, feeling completely secure for the first time in my entire life.

They exchanged their vows, the priest pronounced them husband and wife, and the room erupted into cheers.

Later that evening, Alexander and I walked out onto the stone balcony overlooking the estate's massive gardens.

The stars were shining brightly, and the cool night air felt incredibly refreshing.

"We did it," I whispered, leaning my head against his strong shoulder.

"No, darling, you did it," Alexander corrected softly, kissing the top of my head.

"You survived them, and now you never have to see them again."

I smiled, finally looking forward to a future filled with love, wealth, and the beautiful family we were about to build together.

Everything was perfect, and the nightmare was finally over.

As we turned to head back inside, a sleek black town car pulled into the gravel driveway below.

A stunningly beautiful woman with dark hair stepped out of the vehicle, wearing a sharp crimson trench coat.

She looked up at the balcony, a cold, calculated smile spreading across her lips as she made direct eye contact with Alexander.

Standing right beside her, gripping her hand tightly, was a little boy who had Alexander's exact, unmistakable gray eyes.
