Chapter 1 - The Velvet Box

The room was entirely silent except for the sharp intake of breath from my mother.

Every eye in the hallway stared at the small velvet box resting in my palm.

Alexander stood beside me like a shield, his presence filling the cramped space with an undeniable authority.

I slowly opened the lid, expecting to see the wedding band we had picked out in secret months ago.

Instead, nestled on the black satin was a heavy platinum key and a folded piece of thick legal paper.

Aunt Marlene leaned forward, her eyes widening with a sickening blend of greed and disbelief.

"Is this some kind of sick joke?" my mother finally hissed, her face flushing a deep, angry red.

"Emily doesn't know anyone like you, let alone have a husband."

Alexander did not even look at her.

His eyes remained fixed on me, softening in a way that he reserved only for our private moments.

"Take out the paper, Emily," he said quietly.

My trembling fingers pulled the thick document from the box and unfolded it carefully.

It was a deed of ownership with the ink barely dry.

The document proved that Alexander had just purchased the historic Hawthorne Estate, the exact location where my brother's wedding was scheduled to take place tomorrow.

"You bought the wedding venue?" I gasped, looking up at him in absolute shock.

"I thought you might need a safe place to get ready where no one could touch your things," he replied smoothly.

My father dropped his newspaper completely, the pages rustling loudly against the hardwood floor.

"Now see here, young man," my father stammered, stepping forward with false bravado.

"You can't just barge into my house and make these ridiculous claims about being married to my daughter."

Alexander finally turned his gaze to my family, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

"I didn't barge in, I was invited by my wife," he stated, his voice like cracking ice.

"And as the new owner of the estate, I alone decide who is allowed on the property tomorrow."

My mother's smug expression completely evaporated, replaced by genuine panic as she realized her control was slipping away.

Lucas, my brother, finally spoke up from the middle of the stairs.

"Wait, are you saying you're going to cancel my wedding?" Lucas asked, his voice cracking with anxiety.

Alexander adjusted his expensive cuffs slowly, deliberately letting the heavy silence stretch.

"That depends entirely on how you all treat Emily for the next twenty-four hours," Alexander warned.

My mother narrowed her eyes, her panic quickly transforming back into toxic malice.

"You think your money can scare me into respecting this pathetic girl?" she sneered, stepping closer to Alexander.

"You clearly don't know the truth about the woman you married."

She turned to me with a wicked, triumphant smile that made my stomach twist into knots.

"Tell him, Emily, tell your billionaire husband what you actually did to your last boss, or should I?"
