Chapter 10 - The Real Target

David slammed hard onto the wet concrete as Principal Hayes dragged him back down into the dark tunnel.

The corrupt principal raised a heavy pistol, aiming it directly at David's forehead with a look of pure hatred.

Before Hayes could pull the trigger, a blinding spotlight from a police helicopter illuminated the storm drain above.

Dozens of armed tactical police officers swarmed the grate, pointing their weapons down into the tunnel.

An officer screamed for Hayes to drop his weapon, leaving the principal completely frozen in the blinding light.

Knowing he was entirely outmatched, Hayes slowly lowered his gun and raised his hands in defeat.

David kicked the man away and quickly climbed up the concrete slope to join his daughter on the surface.

The cold night air felt incredible as paramedics rushed over to wrap them in warm, reflective emergency blankets.

Julian’s billionaire father arrived in a convoy of black SUVs, tears streaming down his face as he hugged his son tightly.

The wealthy CEO shook David’s hand, promising that his family would forever be in his debt for saving Julian.

The missing teacher was treated for shock, finally safe from the nightmare that had consumed their day.

Police escorted a handcuffed Principal Hayes into the back of a heavily armored transport vehicle.

The conflict was finally resolved, the villains were captured, and the children were entirely safe.

David carried Lily to his car, feeling a profound sense of peace wash over his exhausted body.

He drove them back to their quiet suburban home, the chaotic events of the day slowly fading into the rearview mirror.

Later that night, after tucking a sleeping Lily safely into her bed, David walked into his dark kitchen for a glass of water.

He flipped on the overhead light and instantly froze in his tracks.

Sitting perfectly in the center of his kitchen table was a single, heavy silver coin bearing a black hawk emblem.

It was the exact same signature coin left by the assassin who had murdered his wife five years ago.

Beneath the coin was a freshly handwritten note that simply read: "The girl was just a distraction to see if you were still sharp."
